Generally speaking, what COULD cause the tranny to flair on the 2-3 shift. The shift is kinda like a hesitation from disengagement of 2nd to engagement of 3rd. All other gears seem to be fine???
TIA

If the clutchpack has too much clearance and the band has too much clearance, this can happen. It needs to apply the clutches and knock off the band as the servo has the 3rd accumulator in it. Even if the clutchpack has the right amount of clearance and the band is too loose, it can flare, especially with more throttle. I built one that had almost 1/4 inch of band clearance and the trans shifted perfect at light throttle and anything over 1/4 throttle produced the flare.

2-3 flairs can be caused by numerous things and the main one is as stated above with the clearance issues. It could be cavitating under extreme throttle and sucking air as well. is the tranny overfilled a quart? See if you can get a tranny pressure gauge on it and see what its pressures are at max and min tv, then see what the pressure is doing on that shift, it could be a blown seal for the direct (2-3 clutches) possibly the teflon rings or (metal sealing rings) are leaking on the center support. pressure readings will help the tranny guys on here make a sound guess at what the problem is. Good luck

OK,
A band being too loose should have little to do with a 2-3 flair...
It just has to release on time, in coordination with the directs apply.

If you said a really loose direct pack would contribute I would agree somewhat. But a too loose band would just cause maybe a cutaway on a 3-2 kickdown.

The directs would have to be WAY loose to be a problem.

I think band release hole in the seperator plate, and 3rd gear feed hole have more to do with it.

As well as the fact the directs are just weak on a 200-4R.

Dual feed the directs, get the feed holes properly sized, get the direct clearance to about .060" and everything should be fine.

On a unit that has been in operation for a while it is probably a pressure problem.

Yes, but the servo is also the accumulator for the 2-3 shift. If, like the one I had to build, the servo has almost 1/4" of clearance, it has to bottom out and compress the 3rd accumulator to complete the shift. Just as if you were to have a week spring in the 1-2 accumulator, the shift would be soft there. When the band is adjusted properly, you only worry about it releasing to make the 2-3 shift as there is very little travel and fluid is directed to the direct pack quicker. This is all I was saying. Not making this the only possibility.:D

I pulled the pan tonight to do some poking around and found that I, like a jackass, had 2 filter O rings up in there. Seems that the last service I performed I forgot to retrieve the O ring that was stuffed up inside the tranny when it slid off the old filter. Do you all think this could cause my flair? The average lay person could make the guess that this might cause a pressure loss, but I don't know enough about the tranny to make this deduction....what do you all think? Anyhow, I removed 1 O ring and reinstalled the filter. Hopefully if it stops raining tommorow I'll road test it.

it has nothing to do with clutch or band clearance.it is improper hydraulic calibrations.if the band or directs are too tight they will always produce a problem especiaaly at small throttle angles and this is still very unl;ikely .flares under load is a cluch slipping or the band is releasing too fast putting the car back to first for a split second generating the oveerev condition.it goes back to first because the forward clutch is on and this is the same as being in first gear.if it was just rebuilt recheck and drill seperator plate or recalibrate or be prepared to pull it out.

The sep plate was drilled per the instructions that came with the shift kit supplied by Mike Kurtz. The gaskets were lined up perfectly before installing and the VB torqued evenly. I drove the car the other day and removing the second O ring did not cure the problem. Seems though that the flair is not as bad, but that might be in my head.

If you can get a press. guage & hook it up, go for a ride & record what the press. does.

I took the car out today with the modified gov to see what was up. I really tried to pay attention to what was going on. What I noticed is that from about 1/2 throttle on the tranny flairs. With the gov shaved for more WOT RPM, the problem is even more exagerated! Just at 1/2 throttle the tach hit 6000 rpm on the 2-3, and at WOT it is well over 6000 RPM??? I'm yanking the tranny after the world of wheels car show and taking it back to the dude that built it. The guy stands behind his work and will hopefully be able to pin point the problem. I took the stageright T brake out this winter because it seemed to me that the MPH was all over the place run to run.....someone else with a TTA and a SR brake had similiar problems....took the brake out and MPH was back up and consistant. Anyhow, what else should I tell the builder to look for other than the obvious blown/broken stuff? TIA
