I have an '86 200 Fourtrax (electric and pull-start) and an '87 250 Fourtrax (kick-start only, no battery) and both have developed no-spark problems...

The 200 was just sitting there idling after a ride, and then up & died. Got it to fire--then die shortly thereafter--about 3 more times, and it's never started again. There's no spark...changed the plug & coil, no help...disconnected the kill-switch, no help. I'm assuming there's a hall-effect type ignition module, and that it may be bad? Is there something else I may not be thinking of??

And earlier this summer my trusty 250 just up & died while on a ride, only to fire right back up and run fine the rest of the day. Next day the same exact thing happened...On our last trip out, I couldn't get it to start at all. Wore myself out 3 times trying...on the 4th try, it fired on the first kick....Drove it for a few miles, then it stranded me. Pushed it about halfway home, trying to start it every so often. Came to a hill, and on the way down, it push-started, and it got me right to camp, where it died again. When it dies, it's like someone just turned the key off, no stumble at all, so I'm sure it's not fuel related. (also, no spark during no-start episodes) Also, since it wouldn't start COLD, I'm pretty sure it's not HEAT related.

Had the wife pull me around the neighborhood the other day, and it would fire & die intermittently. However, the headlight would work even while not firing (but with the engine TURNING from being towed) so at least I know it's getting power from the alternator. I haven't messed with the kill switch (other than to slide it back & forth to no avail while being towed) and since this bike has no battery, I guess the ignition switch could be the problem, but again I'm assuming an ignition module problem?

Anyone have a clue or some info? I know zilch about rectifiers & other stuff that may be the problem...Many thanks in advance!
