I have a 85 Monte Carlo SS that is pretty much stock. The trans was working fine and i decided to put a shift kit in it. I used the B&M shift kit. My problem now is everything works like it should except it will not downshift into 1st. I can manually put it in first and it works fine but if I have it in drive it wants to pull out in 2nd. Anyone have any suggestions. Also I was told the governor may be causing it and I put a new one in and it did not help.

yeah. sometimes if you come to a complete stop it will drop into 1st after about 10 seconds. if you do a really slow rolling stop it always stays in 2nd.

If your line press. is over 100 - 140 psi. they seem to want to start in 2nd. Did you change the boost valve? I did one once put the valve in wrong max line all the time & 2nd gear starts too.

If line is over 90psi at idle it may not want to go back into 1st. Try taking one or 2 clicks out of the TV cable adjuster.

Did you put a shim between the TV plunger and the TV spring? If the shim is too thick it can also increase line pressure enough to cause second gear starts. Shim it enough to take out the slack, but not preload the spring.

I will try the tv cable. I don't have the tools to check the line pressure. If the tv cable doesn't work I will take it to a trans shop.

try it with the cable off.what happens now?dont beat it up tho.just try it and reconnect

OK... played with the tv cable and if i loosen the cable(meaning shifts real early and soft)it does not want to downshift into first at all....if i tighten it, it seems to work a little better but, not like it should.... what would i need to buy to check the line pressure and where do you check it at?
