Hi, I dropped off my BRF core tranny at a highly recommended shop specializing in 2004-Rs today. I was just curious what you think of his parts selection on his builds, and if there is anything else you would add. The one I am listing is his stage 2 trans, one that he recommends for 11.50 and slower apps. Although he has a stage 3 tranny, he said people run this trans in the 10's, although he does not recommend it. The stage 2 costs $1040.00 and looks like this:

FRONT PUMP
Drain back holes enlarged to prevent seal blow out, seal clip installed.
10 Vain Rotor, TRANSGO hardened rings and slide spring for high RPM use.
Hardened stator support.
New high pressure regulator valve and spring.
New .500 TV boost valve--.300 2nd - Reverse boost valves.

OPTION
Non Lock-Up Valve in pump (use with non lock up pump)

4th Clutch
Apply piston machined down to accept additional clutch plate.
Alto Red Clutches - Koleen Steels
Stator washer modified for better lubrication.

3rd Clutch
6 Alto Red Clutches - 6 Koleen Steels
Wide teflon drum bushings.
Teflon sealing rings.
Clutch drum surface machined true.
Inner liner welded.

2nd Band
Kevlar lined

Valve Body
Machined flat, modified for better clutch apply and holding pressure.
Manual-Automatic Shift.

Case
Machined flat, Bronze bushing installed.

Pan
Aluminum Spacer for use with 700R4 Filter.

Any thoughts are appreciated, and TIA.

Sounds like you took it to Jimmy's in Mundelein. :) Is that price include installation or pick it up when it's done and you install?

All of the Chicago Turbo Regal guys rave about Jimmy's 2004r work. I wish he would pop in here once in a while! ;)

I have a BRF I need a rebuild on soon and was planning on calling them next week to get some pricing ideas.

:D

Yup, Jimmies in Mundelein :) That price is drop your car off, and pick it up when its done. I dont have that option anymore, because I sold my old tranny, but he highly recommends dropping it off and they do the R&R and all the adjustments etc. Alot of people around me use Jimmies too and have had great luck. Any other thoughts?

Sounds good, but?

Not bad.... would not recommend Kevlar band, theyr'e to hard on drum, Alto wide red is better bet. Raybestos blue plates in 3rd (direct drum) instead of red, better bitting. What about servo? would get a larger Billet one. Also make sure you have a hardened sun gear shell.

OK, does that kit you linked me to require any additional machining? Would that kit just be for the 2nd gear stuff where his list is a little thin? Also, when you ask about the Servo, is that in addition to the kit you linked? What is on his list is what you get, so as far as the servo goes, I really dont know. I'm sorry for sounding ignorant, but I know nothing about the inside of trannies. Thanks for any info in advance.

I would HIGHLY recommend the servo/band kit in the link. Everything in the link comes complete and ready to drop in, no maching required. Yes it is for second gear, the servo applies the band to achieve 2nd. Bigger servo equals more force to apply and hold 2nd and with adjustable pin you get perfect adjustment unlike stock pins. Wide band and anchor pin are unbeatable.

Thanks for the info

Is that price still accurate on the kit? Also, how do you go about telling this guy to run parts other than the ones he typically uses? He might be OK with it, but I'm not a know it all and do not want to offend him. Thoughts?

The price as listed is correct not the one's in the description, they forgot to correct it...... LOL! I would just ask Jimmy up front before hand if minds if you get your own band/anchor and servo if he minds putting them in. The most he could do is say no, but on these perticular items I can't see him doing that and if does I would have to ? WHY! Servo band and anchor are not something I would think any builder would have problem useing.

being a supplier and manufacturer of transmissions ,parts and convertors i contacted the shop (jimmys)to open a door between us .i told him about our planets ,drums ,input shafts ,brakes etc .our conversation yielded many things ,one . of them being that jimmy certainly is capable of turning out a good job for you .we have had success w/aalto reds over the blue plates in certain applications and i run 8 in the hi drum of my 84 406 powered hurst olds w/an nos fogger system .1000 plus hp on the hit .i also have had success w/ kevlar bands when the drum is finished properly .(our wides of course )as far as servos nothing in my opinion holds better than an76 to 78 200 3spd servo when installed w/amitsubishi km outer dring and a 700governor seal on the inside .www.ckperformance.com

Chris,
can you post pics and/or dimensions of the 200 Servo?
Interesting...
Why would GM redesign a servo for the Gn trannies if they already had a better one in their inventory?
GM does do some weird stuff though (I work for 'em).

TIA,
Jake

the reason for the change according to the folks at hydromatic was carbuyers complained the trans shifted too firm .the servo is larger than a gnat 694 and the release side allows a larger volume of oil to take off the band quicker during a 2/3 upshift .this servo allows barking on the 1/2 and 2/3 w/out drilling the plate .they also come in our recalibration kit .we have about 500 pieces in stock and get them in on a regular basis.if you cant locate one call us up and we will get you one to examine if youd like .www.ckperformance.com
