2004r Band Apply Pin Measurement

I have my 2004r transmission down for overhaul, and my service manual calls for a special tool to measure which band apply pin to use. Is there any way to take this measurement with a dial indicator without the special tool called for? I currently have the pin with three grooves in it.

You can use a dial indicator on the servo cover. With the servo cover O-ring temporarily removed, set clearance between .060"-.080". It's OK to grind the pin to achieve proper clearance.
