I'm in the process of installing a 2004r from a 89 caprice in my grand national until I rebuild the original one my problem is the converter lock up plugs are not the same on my gn it has four wire plug and the 89 2004r has three wire plug. What would I have to do to make it work properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your new trans has a three cavity plug then the only way to get it to work is either change the plug in the case to a 4 pin or change the connector on the factory harness to a 3 plug. How about some pics?

If I go from 4 wire plug to a 3 wire plug what wire in the tranny would I have to eliminate? I'll post pics later 2nite I'm at work

The Caprice trans most likely does not have a 3rd gear status switch so it only requires 3 wires instead of 4. There are two ways you can go about this. 1) The Caprice connector is most likey keyed different so the GN plug will not fit into it. You can take an xacto knife and cut the key tabs in the Caprice connector so you can plug the GN plug into it. 2) Remove the feed through connector from you GN transmission and install it in the Caprice transmission, still using the Caprice trans internal wiring harness. Either way you won't have 3rd gear status which is no big deal as long as you drive it normally and are not racing it especially with a chip that requires 3rd gear status for some reason.

Option 1 sounds like the way I'm going I really don't want to go back in to the pan. I don't race but I do give it hell from light to light lol

Make sure you know what wires are connected to the terminals inside the Caprice transmission. When the gn plug is connected to the transmission, the top left terminal is the hot lead and bottom left is the ground. The wires on the top right and bottom right are the 3rd and 4th gear switches. My point is, if you get the hot and ground wires wrong you will fry the TCC solenoid.

I ended up going to the junk yard and getting a 3 wire plug then I spliced it into the existing plug now I can use both transmissions without cutting wires. The wire colors matched up the same on both plugs.

Sounds like a winner.

In the future you can use a de-pinning tool and remove the 4pin connector and install the 3 pin with no splicing or cutting. Just tape the extra wire up till you're ready to switch back again.

No it won't fry the TCC solenoid. It is a coil that creates a magnetic field that moves a check ball. The polarity does not matter.

The polarity does matter. There is a diode internally across the solenoid to prevent back emf. If you get the polarity reversed you will fry the diode.
