The '08 CTS in itself is an awesome car. I still can't loate a black one locally for the wife. Caddy did the bodylines right on that car, and handles like a track car. 500 hp will make the CTS a beast.

Thats freaken awesome! Looks like an automatic to me. Im sure the price will reflect...

That "6 speed Manual" is going to be pretty hard to shift without a clutch pedal

now thats funny, btw ungn i got those rikens 16x9.5 done, thanks for the help choosing b/s'ing.
fit 275s 255s fine, but if i wanna go 295s i'll needa 1/2 or 1/4 inch spacers, no big deal :)
I got a few sets of 255s i need to burn real quick anyways lol.

I may be wrong but that car is going to have an 8speed automatic:eek: cadi and buick are going to be using them.

Checking back to the source, the interior is from a late Aug. prototype model with automatic and the 505HP LS7 motor in it. Source says that the LS7 option STILL may become available with the automatic, as 1 step down from the supercharged LS9 6 speed! Also good possibility that the Corvette Z06 will have an automatic option in 2009, currently that motor is rated at 500HP down 5 HP from the 6 speed.

Nice to have 2 different 500+ HP options on the new Caddy!

too bad its gonna weigh 4200 lbs. it will need that extra power. it still is a bad @$$ looking ride!!!

An 8 speed auto, where is this gonna stop, 10 speed, 20 speed, I do not understand this, someone needs to explain this to me, I just do not understand the need or the rational for all those speeds!!!

Sorry to get off post topic but he asked.

If an engine has a particular rpm range it makes power in getting the best performance involves keeping it in that range.

Example: If the engine makes its peak numbers(HP, torque, what ever you are measuring) from 2000-2500 rpm the transmission will be able to keep it there in that rpm 'window' with a greater number of gear ratios. The Torque converter can stall around 1800-2000 rpm let the engine rev to 2500-2600 rpm and shift to the next gear that is conveniently placed to let the engine rpm to drop to 2000. This keeps the engine where it is making the most of its power.

It could also be used to keep the engine in the rpm range where it makes the best fuel economy. At least that is what I think. Maybe others have another opinion.

I hope they've done something with the rear end setup in these. They don't last long under hard driving with the old 400 hp LS6. I hate to think about the life span of the same rear with these stronger engines.

+2.What Rich says. Here's how you can visualize the need for that many foward ratios. Imagine you're racing a 125cc Formula 1 motorcycle. That little moped engine may redline at 20K but its powerband is less than 1000RPM wide at around the 15-16K mark. Your goal is to go as fast as you can and keep the bike in it's powerband. You can shift as many times as you want even if that means 100 pulls of the clutch lever per lap. You wont notice the gear changes with the computer controlled slush box. It's supposed to act like a CVT type tranny.

I could have fun with that car if they have a manual override and paddle shifter as an option.

I'm looking at the first pic and damn! That hood looks sexy. Why cant somebody do the same thing for a TR? It looks like a TR bulge but only bigger. It sure beats some dumb a$$ cowl hood made for a Chevy.

In essence that really what I was implying was a CVT tranny and be done with it, 8 speeds, wonder how big that dude is and how complicated or complex when it comes time for a repair, I would bet it would not be along the lines of a th350 or 2004r, 4l60e,etc.

Ron

Everything is more complex now!

Nice car but the Z06 is still going to show it taillights on the track

Well the 6L80 auto 6 speed is about the same physical size as a THM400. Invision the Alison 5 speed auto from a DuraMax shrunk down to 3/4 scale and you get the picture. It cant be any different than any other tranny except for the extra planetaries and clutch packs. I would imagine the 8 speed is the same size. The Germans already have an 8 gear slushbox in the top end luxobarges. It's going to be tight under the floorpan. You can get AWD as an option on the 08 CTS/STS. And you could assume this model is going to have it too.

What I would really like to know is if this weaker engine is going to be an option on the 09 Camaro? You know they aint going to steal the ZR1s thunder by stuffing the 600 horse version in it.

Eric if it is available in AWD that might be my next ride......can at least convince the wife that the kids can get in the back
