tranny question?
all of the sudden my tranny started making a rather loud zzzzzz sound at idle when in gear, after I get to about 10-15 mph it pretty well goes away.
Tranny seems to operate fine, shifting the way it always did, but in either D or R it makes the whizzing sound, speeds up with throttle input.
Any ideas, need rebuild or torque converter or both?

thanks in advance.

2 causes come to mind:

1. Pressure Regulator valve buzz. This can buzz under some conditions as the converter feed circuit is fed. There is a way to take out & grind the this valve to eliminate this. You don't need to overhaul it to do this.

2. The filter is leaking air. But this should happen all the time.

You could also have something else broken, but the PR valve is the most likely.

Where are you located?

I am in Canada. Wet Coast, Vancouver BC

I am not positive, but I think the sound is more mechanical in nature.

I saw a Service Bulletin from years ago where some 700's with a 7 vane pump would whine. Again, I think you would have the whine from day one with that problem. It could also be a Throttle Valve (TV) system problem, but that's iffy, like the spring between the TV plunger & TV valve was to weaken. It could be a blown out valve body gasket. It could be other damage to the pump or torque converter. It could be a bearing thats bad.
