If you're interested to see a cool movie that features this technology, check out the title HUGO(2011) directed by none other than Martin Scorcese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino, The Departed, etc).

Its a departure from his usual crime/violence faire in that it takes factual elements of film history and early mechanical inventions and weaves a compelling fictional story around them.

Featuring Jude Law, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Kingsley, its worth a look (and only rated PG, its kid-friendly too!)...

they actually had stuff like that over 2000 years ago... they had machines that did fully automated plays complete with sounds and special effects, all operated by weights and/or water.
