wonder what it is?

Its the biggest relay in the bunch behind the windshield washer resivoir. My question, what does it control?




I took it off to clean behind it and it kinda rattled. I took it apart and a ton of rust dumped out. Obviously it wasn't working, or if it was it was about to crap out. Whatever it is it's like $27 on GMpartsdirect. for a stupid relay.

If it's the biggest of [3] relays, it'll be the fan delay relay that controls how long the cooling fans run after shutting down the car.

Aha! Thats prolly why mine doesn't stay on after the car is turned off. I've seen this on lots of cars, always wondered why mine didn't do it.

I thought that too and replaced mine. Still didn't "work". I found out that it only stays on above a certain coolant temp, and it's fairly high for a 160 degree thermostatted (new word?) engine.

You don't need or want that relay on your car. It was a not so good idea from Buick.

Killed a lot of batteries in a lot of cars......

If you buy a new one keep it in your sock drawer not on the car.

Salvage - How are you getting around it?

When I turn the car off I can walk into the house knowing my battery is safe.

Easy to get around it. Just unplug it.

It doesn't do anything other than run the fan for 8-10 minutes after the high temp. coolant switch is activated when you turn the key off.

The high speed fan runs the high speed operation just fine when you are driving or idling the car.

John Spina at Caspers recommends storing it as well.

If you disconnect it remove both connectors from it as bad battery drain can occur on either one at any time.

I have the high/low harness from Kirbans on my car and never had a problem yet with the fan running to long and killing the battery. I manualy turn mine on after allot of driving and so far so good.

never had a problem here even when the car gets around 220 or so the fan only stays on for a few minutes must have a bad bat or cooling problem

It is my understanding that the problems are not necessarily that the delay doesn't work and the fan stays running, but that sometimes it will just come on in the middle of the night.

I would suspect that if this were a major problem with relatively new relays, GM would have had a recall or replacement. I suspect that it is more of a problem with old relays.

Never the less, you can just pull it and minimize the risk.

Umm...after working in the aftermarket auto warranty industry for nearing 4 years now, I would NEVER assume GM would recall or admit to parts that obviously consistanly have failures on a regular basis. And GM is not the only one.

Keep it in there.

They don't run that often at 3am.

Usually about an hour or so before your battery gets very very sleepy.....

Do a search on the fan delay relay, lotsa good info. out there.

Or you can try a search on the sock drawer.

I bypassed mine by breaking the high temp switch connector. One day I'll get around to replacing that. Besides, my high speed fan has never run after shutdown either.
