I'm ready to dump the old D5. It's served me well, but I want to go quicker. I was reading another thread with a great explaination from Dusty regarding the coupling of an unlocked converter at high rpm, LU vs non-LU. Question is this, my car has a stock cam and it shifts at no more than 5200 rpms, closer to 5k even, which is fine with my stock cam hp peak at 4400, but will an unlocked 2800 LU converter still couple well @ that low of an rpm? My tranny will take a locked converter, but frankly, I don't want to do it even with a good converter. I like the manners of the stock converter unlocked at the track, and I want to launch harder, and want to maintain a LU converter, but I'll stick with the D5 if a 2800 LU won't couple well at 5k rpm unlocked. Thanks in advance for any help or previous experiences. I want to keep my combo simple.

Maybe others can chime in with their experiences. I've never tried maxing out a stock cam with a 2800 stall. I will say that a 2800 stall on a mid 11 second car with a stock cam will most likely loose mph from a D5 just because of slip in 3rd gear. You would most likely gain .2 in the 1/4 but loose some mph.

If you like the way your D5 works, I could build a restalled D5 that would help your launch but wouldn't give up much mph from what you have now.

I can do a 10" converter with a 2400 stall that should work on both ends of the track but it would need to be non lock.

I appreciate the suggestion but I want a converter that will work with the next turbo too. Not sure what that'll be yet but I know I'll need at least a 2800. Anyone else out there running a 2800 converter with a stock cam?

go 3000 or 3200 stall just put one on my car and wow what a diffrence

Sounds like you'll just have to buy something in the 2800 stall range and live with whatever slip you get until you can make a cam change.
