First off I'd like to say hi. I've been lurking on this and numerous other TR websites for a few months now. I just recently sold my streetbike to allow me to pursue owning a Turbo Buick. This morning I went to go look at an 86 T-Type and to make a long story short it wasn't the car for me. The owner however did tip me off on a 87 GN that is in my hometown that is not necassarily for sale but could be had. He told me where it was and I did a drive by.

I was flabergasted by what I saw. It was obvious that the car has been sitting for quite sometime (atleast 10 years if I had to guess). The paint as you can imagine is absolutely shot. It is severly oxidized as it has been sitting in the driveway uncovered, exposed to the elements. All 4 tires are flat, etc. Here is where it gets good though. I peeked in the interior and looks to be in absolutely "like new" condition. No visible wear what-so-ever.

I did not knock on the door but according to the guy that gave me the heads up (he knocked on his door a couple of years back) it has original 28K MI. He is an older gentleman (60s). According to my source he offered the gentleman $4,000.00 for the car as is. He turned him down and said he wants $8,000.00 or he'd rather just let it rot in the driveway. The car is a hardtop, PW, PL. That's all I could really tell w/ the quick lookover I had.

So what do you guys think? Is it worth looking into/pursuing. I wasn't looking for something w/ this low of mileage nor was I looking for a project. Is $8,000.00 way too much? Is a car sitting this long even worth it? Thanks in advance for the replies and I apologize for the length of this, especially since it's my first post. Thank you again.

Edit: I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. I wasn't sure where to post.

is it worth it?

NO

more than likely 128,000

offer him 2000.00 for it and see what he says

For the sake of argument let's say that it is 28K miles (I would run a vin check regardless).

I would say absolutely not. Not for $8K. We are talking about a guy who has completely forsaken his vehicle. I would seriously doubt that any problems with this vehicle are strictly superficial. Are you going to get a cheap paint job for your 28k mile car? I would hope not. I think you will end up having too much money invested into the car, and that you will never be able to get that money back when it comes time to sell. I lived next to an older guy who was the same way with his '69 mustang he got when he was in highschool. He went through some traumatic event that f'd him up in the head, and he just stoppend caring about everything. He had a lot of money and would buy really nice classic cars and just let them rot in his driveway. The mustang had a freaking tree growing out of it, and he was only going to get rid of it if someone came by and offered him $10K for it. After 15 years, the city finally made him get rid of it. I would not spend any significant sum of money on a car owned by someone with this sort of mentality.

OK-
so IF it had 28K on it and you are thinking of spending 8k on a car that probably isnt worth 2,000.00 and needs about 8K worth of work and 100s of hours of work, is it really worth it?
i really dont think its cost effective to do that-

mileage isnt everything on these cars, its the quality of the car that makes it worth what someones willing to pay.

I dont want to be so abrasive, but im trying to let you know my opinion, ive had 14 of these cars.

i say let it rot till he is willing to come down on the price, oh yeah, why is it sitting?
there has to be a reason why it sat so long right? we dont just park a perfectly running car for 10 years without starting it or driving it right?

most likely blew the motor or the trans is flairing.... who knows without talking with him-

i would look into this car for about the same amount of money and you dont have to restore it.

I must emphasize that the $$$$ part is all heresay. I have not knocked on the door or spoken w/ the gentleman myself. I do agree the $8K is steep (and no I wouldn't cheap out on the paint, I have quite a bit of money tied up in paint in my other car). According to my source the gentleman suffered a stroke and became ill. I'm going to go by there tomorrow and talk to the gentleman myself. I have to know what is going on. Who knows maybe he has changed his mind and just wants it off his property (a person can dream).

Edit: ^ I don't think you're being abrasive and I appreciate the input. That's why I posted on here. Your point regarding the mileage is a valid one. I like the idea that the car may have low-mileage and has been owned by an older gentleman, this may=low abuse (possibly).

if it really has 28k only one way to confirm that, run a carfax on the car and then if it really does have 28k its prolly worth around 4k to 6k and no more, you will have to do a lot to that car to make it run half way decent.. good luck..

28K Gn worth it?

I have owned several Turbo Regals over the years. I think you should stay away from it. Bet you will spend 15k on the car to get in shape and that is a conserative number. Just my opinion, based on experience. Good Luck!

IF the car's salvagable and does have 28k miles I'd say it's not worth anything over $5,000 tops.

Sounds like a FULL can of worms! You are asking for more problems then it is worth. Take your hard earned money and buy a TR/GN that is running. When a car sits that long all the oil runs off the main bearings, wrist pins, and cylinder walls develops rust. Same goes for the tranny. Hardest thing on a car is to let it sit. The coolant fluids get acidic and eats up the cooling system. The car will have a moldy mustly smell. I looked at a wasted car like what you are describing and said no way!!! Would've cost alot to repair. Low mileage is not the only cosideration.
