2nd gear shift

I rebuilt the tranny due to no 2nd gear at all. I had first, 3rd, 4th, no 2nd. Now after the rebuild I have all of the gears, but 2nd is really soft. During the rebuild the book said I should have a check ball in the 1-2 accumulator housing retained by a sleeve. I had and have no such check ball. I is this or could this be why 1-2 shift is sh*t?

still having this problem. Car shifts weak, almost can't feel it, into 2nd. 2nd to 3rd is hard, almost chirps, and 3rd to overdrive is very firm. The car also sometimes from a 40 mph punch, will down shift, then feels like it is not going anywhere, but getting 20 lbs of boost. Also when this happens, I let off, then knock shows 30 + . Other times runs great, except for 1,2 shift. Also, I have 0 to1 knock any other time. Please, someone give me a starting point. Thanks.
