327 SBC Value???

OK fellas, I got the cast numbers: 3858174(back of block), FO5I7Y8(front of block), 3814480(heads).
 
3858174: 1964-1967 327 block, 275 hp to 350 hp, 2 barrel carb, used in Caprice/Impala, Chevelle/El Camino and Corvette

FO5I7Y8: F= Flint Mich; 05 = May; 17; 17 = day ( Built May 17 in Flint MI), Y8; you need to recheck this digit. This is the "suffix code" which usually pin points what car this is out of. According to my book, there is no "Y8" code, there is however a "YB" code which decodes this as coming out of a 1968 Chevy 3/4 ton truck.

3814480: used on 1962-1967 283 and 327, 1.72 intake valve/1.50 exhaust valve
 
Well, theres a start. Could this be a saught after engine? The heads aint much, but atleast the block may be.
 
I'm going to say no. A 327 is a good engine but compared to todays standards of a 383, it's pretty much obsolete. I still say it's worth maybe $500 if it runs strong and doesn't need a rebuild. If it does need a rebuild, it's worth closer to $150.
 
IMHO that engine has some value. I used to own a 1967 Z/28. I could redline that engine at 8500. The original base for the 302 is a 327 small journal block coupled with a 283 crank. Someone looking to de-stroke a 327 small journal to create a high-reving small block, would probably very interested in that block. You just have to find the right person.

Actually the 302 is a 3.00 stroke and a 4.00 bore

Right. The 327 used a 4 inch bore. The 283 used a 3 inch stroke.

And yes it would take the "right" person to want to do that. Because unless you're running NOS or a blower/turbo, cubes are your friend. That's why today people are building 383's and 496's as opposed to the other common engine builds of yesteryear.

They just built the 302 to get the Camaro into the Trans AM race back in '67-'68-'69 which limited the cubes to 305. Those 302's didn't start making any power until 5k rpm and usually had to make use of 3.73-4.10 rear gears using a 1:1 4th gear Muncie 4 speed without overdrive.

302 was a large journal in 1968 when the large journal 327 was introduced.
 
The 302 was a small journal for 1967. Starting in 1968 they went to big journal.
 
A 67 z/28 is nearly priceless these days.

I can remember the camaro research group was trying to figure out how many were left.

Quite rare...

Not ZL1 Rare but Rare.... :biggrin:
