My tranny (th 400) locks up when I put in second gear. I mean it drags the tires. No third gear either, Just first and reverse.
I was told I "flipped the sprag" . Now I took it apart and it looks like there's no way in hell that could happen. So the question I have is which way should the sprag turn? Mine turns counterclockwise. Is this correct? If it's not the sprag than what could it be? Thanks!
 
INTERMEDIATE SPRAG

Turns counter clockwise freewheeling on a 400 drum.
Counterclockwise for a 350.
Also, if you blow the lugs in the case, it will do the same thing.

if the sprag was locked youd still have 2nd,but no third.if it flipped youd have no second ,but third,if you installed it upside down itll do exactly what your saying it does .is this a fresh rebbuild.if the intermediate band is stuck it will lock in third also .did you relace the int band?
 
No Chris, it isn't a fresh rebuild. I'm not sure how it happened. The last pass the car broke the rearend because the tranny locked up as soon as I shifted to second. At least that's what I think happened. I rebuilt the rearend and went for a test drive to find out the tranny locks up when I shift to second. Only has first and reverse. I don't see any broken parts inside the tranny. A couple of metal shavings, but no broken hard parts. It's a full manual valvebody with a brake. Thanks for the help!
