Just got a 350 chevy for my 55 Chevy 2 door hardtop.
This engine was built by one of the best builders around. His shops name is on the end of the crank along with Main ad rod clearances ..both( .010 ). Seller didnt know anything about it because he got it with a 57 hardtop that got a crate motor from Jegs.
I want to know before i drop this motor in what to look for, so I dont have to pull it again.
It is a 350 bored .030 over, 2 bolt mains with 194 heads.
Heads are off as well as the intake for now.
How to properly inspect heads, rings, bearings?

Newb questions, but I want to learn the proper way instead of hilljacking things together.

I would call the engine builder and ask him questions, if he takes pride in his work he should have detailed info on the build.

I would do this and if it's not his assembled engine bring it back to him for measuring and clearance info if you don't have the tools to measure it.

He is dead guys. been a few years now.
Well that's not good. What I would have done cut the oil filter open aleak down test first and foremost before removing the heads, that would give you an indication as to the overall health of the engine. If that checked out I would pull the timing cover and oil pan. Check chain, crank thrust and a few main and rod bearings

When it is stamped in the end of the crank like what you described, it generally denotes how much the crank has been turned.
It probably looks like this: M .010 R .010 It means the main & rod journals have been turned .010 under size. The clearances on a small block chevy should be about .002 for rods & mains.
