I did some previous searches on this topic...and none of the answers pertained to my question...

I know the 84-85's did NOT come w/ a 3rd brake light...but the wiring SHOULD still be there...no?

In the trunk, in the driverside fender cavity is the harness, and in that harness is the blue wire...but...it doesn't have any power to it.

I need to know:

1. How do I get power to the blue wire in the trunk from the brake pedal...like where do I hafta connect to power this wire?

2. What color is the wire on the switch @ the pedal for the 3rd brake light?

3. OR...do I just hafta run my own wire all the way back to the trunk?

Thanks!

someone had put one in my car when i got it they just tapped into one of the brake light wires back there but i took it out my car

I can check on what that plug is later by looking in the trunk of my 87 car

when you coming out for a visit?

soon as I get fuel supply fixed on my car i'll be either at richmond dragway or VMP either this weekend or the next

I got a 10.97 out of it with a crappy 1.81` 60ft but it ran out of fuel supply in high gear before the traps..:(

thanks for the reply red...I want to put one in the 84, and I know it's the blue wire...but in the trunk harness...the blue one has no power?!?

You just let me know when you get a sat/sun off...enough time to b/s and help a brother tune his car (not for the track, but I do have some specific questions just for everyday drivin') for the day..and I'm there.

I'd go to the track, but my car isn't set up for it, and I know that that wouldn't be the time or the place w/ you working on your car, so when you know of a DAY you can kick back and "chill" I'd love to ride out there and get some advice! :D Hell YOUR runnin' 10.9's...DAY-UM!

How far out are you from here...about 3-4 hrs? 58 all the way right?

I got a 3rd brake light out of a older Monte. Havent put it in yet, but there are two wires coming from it...black and green if I remember right. So i'm just gonna splice those into the existing black and green wires. Are those the same wire colors u have?

all you need to do is hook the black wire to a ground, and then run the other wire to the white wire on the brake switch on the steering column under the dash.and everything will work fine.

Not sure about the Buicks but my 84 Cutlass did NOT have the mounting bracket that the 3rd brake light mounts to. In other words, there is nothing to screw the brake light into. Not sure if the 84/85 Buicks have that bracket but I would think not.

Food for thought.

I would be surprised if GM wired an 84 car for the "blinder brake light" that wasn't required until 86.
Also, you can't splice it to one of the rear brake light wires, because it will blink when you flip the turn signal on.

blackbuick84 - the wires coming off my light are blue, and blue w/ a black line...

49-blues - thanks...I saw that wire, and wondered if that was the right one...

scottyb - I know that...that's why I want to find the correct wire...thanks though ;)

renthorin - I know that there's no mounting brackets...but there are way's around that! ;)

Thanks

Does anyone know what the blue wire in the trunk harness is? It's all by itself, and NOT powered...

John84GN, when I mounted a 3rd brake light in my 84 Cutlass, I just centered it and then drilled a small hole through the rear speaker deck plate thingy. Passsed the wires through the hole along with an anchor wire.

I don't remember what I attached that anchor wire to inside the brake light but once it was in the trunk I just secured it to something in there and it held the light perfectly.

Sorry I can't be more specific...I am getting old and that was a long time ago.....

Its kind of strange how 84-5 didnt have the rear deck brakelight but the same exact holes for the brakelight are provided in the metal part of the rear deck under the carpeted piece.I put a rear deck brakelight in my 85.First I had the problem ScottyB mentioned, the blinking brakelight. Then I ran the wire up front to the brake pedal switch. To feed the wire through the trunk into the back seat area you may need to remove the back seat.If you remove the driverside doorsill plate(kickplate) and pull carpet up a little you can see a conduit with all the other wires going front to back.

How can ya have the mount for a 3rd brake lite in a pre 86 car if it was never offered till 86?? Not like GM was gonna offer it anytime before 86 cause it was not a gov't regulation til then.

The third light is run from a separate set of brake switch contacts on the 87 cars.

If the 84-5 switch is the same the contact will be there. You will need to find that wire up front and hook it up.

Not sure what that blue wire was or wasn't used for on the earlier cars?

Need a manual to be sure or wire it out back to a brake lamp wire. One bulb shouldn't cook the switch contacts. Just don't use one of those halogen replacements.

thanks guy's...

Salvagev6...that's sorta what I was looking for...I know that there's a blue wire in the trunk all by itself, and I just wanted to know that it could be found up front and hooked up...no idea's though right?!? The blue wire is not there under the dash, maybe it's a different color?!? My prob though...not yours...

Thanks for the comments fellas. ;)
