okay so I finally went and picked up this 4.1 block . It has the mysterious 044 casting number . From what research I've done they are supposed to be just as strong as the 291 blocks . I will be taking pictures when I tear her down so we can have Alil more info on this casting number

I have an 044 and a 291. The 044 block appears to be much beefier in the deck area and pan rails than the 291. From what I have found it was a Cadillac used motor, but mine was from an 84 regal.

So I almost have her striped down . She has a good set of 8445 heads . I haven't pulled the pan yet to see f she has a good turbo crank yet . Here is acouple pics of where I'm at

Well I pulled a main cap and a rod cap . The crank is in great condition and is a turbo crank .

Does someone have a picture of a 291 blocks valley area ? Is it similar ?

When I picked up the block I was told
It was making some bad noises . I think I found what those noises where coming from . I think that valve is missing Alil bit off it

The valley area is about the same on all early NA blocks. The 484 and 044 blocks have more material in the front cover area than the 291 blocks I have seen, or it may be an early and late block difference.

Look at the pan rail different between the 044 and 291. I'm not sure if it helps at all in strength, but it is very noticeable in the pics.

Okay I just cleaned up all the casting slag in the valley and chamferd the head bolt holes

Drill a couple steam holes per bank between the cylinder pairs on the lower side. A head gasket makes a perfect template.

Air can't burp out of that area like it can on a 3.8.
