I run the Cometics the way Otto is talking about. Bob at RPE recommended using the spray copper. The MLS type gaskets have origins with the OEM's. Chysler in particular originally recomended installing their MLS type gaskets dry. Later they released a TSB recommending a sealer. It takes an extremely smooth surface finish to get to where Cometic recommends. When I originally installed the Cometic gaskets they were replacing Detroits. I cleaned the deck and cylinder head surface and installed the Cometics. No machining.
I look at it this way, the sealer hasn't hurt. I made a bunch of passes in the 35+ psi range. Zero gasket problems.
