I have a 1983 T-Type Regal motor that I am rebuilding, albeit slowly, to put into a Regal eventually. In my time of toiling over the motor, I have begun to ask questions about transmission options.

It is to my understanding that a 4L60E with the 6 bolt bellhousing pattern should mate up to the '83 block. That begs the question of how I would best control the transmission in the absence of an ECM?

(The ECM was missing when I purchased the engine and I intend to move towards a standard carb setup for it).

I am looking to the 4L60E due to its availability, general reliability, ease of maintenance, aftermarket support, and built in overdrive.

Any help is appreciated!

youll need an adapter , or an aftermarket bellhousing
83 3.8L is BOP pattern
only BOP motor that will bolt to the 4l60 that i know of is the TA aluminum V6 which has both bolt patterns
the later buick v6 3800s have a 60degree pattern(not BOP) and there are 4l60s that will fit that as they were used in F-bodies

the buick ecm never controlled trans (only lockup was controlled) and definitely wouldnt do the 4l60 , youd need a tcu standalone trans controller or there are cheap plug ins that allow a 4l60 to be operated although it will be manual shift and Lockup ... not auto

The 4L60 is a renamed 700-R4. If he can get a bellhousing that lines up, and wire up the convertor lockup, it'll work.

The 4L60E is the one with the computer controlled valve body.
