4L80E core

I was told that there are two different 4L80E transmissions; the newer ones are more desirable. What are the good years? Is it 97 and up? I was also told that you can I D them by looking at the oil cooling lines. What should I look for? Cooler lines side by side? Or cooler line from two different locations?

Also if you have XFI, do you still need another computer to control the transmission.

If i remember correctly the one with the oil fittings that are 1 in the front of the case and the one at the rear of the case is the later model.Also the later ones the electrical connector just clips on the earlier ones used a bolt in the center of the connector to hold them in.The later ones the trans cooler lines are a clip in style verses the earliy ones screwed in to the fitting.

Thanks for the reply, I was told that this was coming out of a 1998 one ton truck. The seller told me that the cooler lines are right next to each other.

Soooooooo, what are the issues if I were to use the earlier style tranny.

No problems with the early 4L80E cores when you are rebuilding it anyway.

You will need a trans cotroller which the newer TCI will connect to your XFI via CAN Bus. The controller works excellent and allows a ton of tuning features. I've using one on my 4L80E which is the earlier case (side by side cooler lines).
