this is a "weekend" warrior, i got the rear

And i was just going to do a full spool
30 spline axles, new housing ends, 3.42's
stock brakes, alluminum drums and the TA rear girdle.

unless you guys think otherwise?

Instead of a spool you can go with an Eaton posi. They have 2. One at 400lb and one at 800lb. They say the 800 is almost like a spool. Do a search on Eaton.

If your going with a brake I would go for the 9". The ring and pinion arangement in the ford is stronger. Which becomes the weak point for an 8.5" once its beefed up.

Just about the same set up here. 9" Nodular case, Detroit locker 35 spline axels, (and for an added measure of strength) I added a pinion support . For what its worth there were few tests that were conducted comparing the Ford 9" to a 8.5 GM rear. In the ET department the tested cars with the 9" lost only a few hundreths in ET compared to the 8.5. Still a loss but not as dramatic as some suspected. The strength increase and piece of mind however is worth it to me.

:) I have a 9" with a detroit locker in my 82 big block F-body street/strip car for many years, car weights 3900 lbs. w/driver and pulls 1.4's on good days and I have never broke a thing in the rear.

You didn't say you were opposed to a 9". If not, spend the extra $1K or so over what you'd dump into your 8.5 only to end up with a weaker set-up and make it bulletproof...
