Sorry for the noob tranny question but i know very little about these. I have my transmission(200r4) built by Dell Transmission. I have no idea what was done to it but i called andersons and they said when they pull em they do everything they can to them. Heres my dilema. Im shooting for 700HP to the wheels and my tranny is probably going to quit on me at some point. My friend has a 700 that he wants to get rid of but OD is shot and it will need to be built up if being used for HP. Heres the question, Is it worth it to build the 700 or sould i build the 200 if and when it brakes? He's sellin it to me for $200 Thanks.

didnt know the 2004r's can handle 7oo horsepower. good god. is this thing even streetable? Why not a TH400?

youre talking about ausing a tranny that was built for a third of the hp your looking at. (except in the turbos of course. )

Stay away from the 700. The 200-4R is stronger. It will be short lived at that HP level though.

Agreed. Be sure to give us a list as to "everything" that was done to the 200 you have. You will need all the billet pieces for that level. I put 706rwtq through mine on the dyno and have had thousands of ratio changes under power on the street. So they can hold up with the right internals and torque converter. My opinion is if you plan on running this thing hard and not driving more than a couple thousand miles a year, buy a 400. It will cost you much less in the future and last longer. Avoid the 700. Actually take the 700 and sell it for more than you paid for it.

The 700 is that bad. wow. some tranny shops tried to talk me into a 700 over my 2004r.

There is probably good reason GM chose to 2004R in the GN's......
might have been cause the 4l80E wasn't out yet

That particular trans was done a least 5-6 years ago (nowhere near what we do now!)and while parts have vastly improved for the 200, it is still a 200. I would suggest you look into a
th400 with a gear vendors unit to support that kind of power with any intention of it surviving

The 700's gearing in 1st is 3.06. Not good for a high torque drag car. Planetaries are available to bring it down to 2.64 but that just adds to the cost. Many shops think the higher number means more strength. That is BS. EightSecV6 has the best advice if you want a strong OD transmission.

Whats a 4l80E? Is that a good choice to build for high HP? I will not get a TH400 because of the lack of over drive. Ive been in GN's with TH400's and i hate it. I drive this car sometimes on the weekends and just like to cruis. It is not a full out racecar and is realisticly more neer 650 HP at the wheels on race tune. I would not be running around town on that much. The most i plan to run on the street is about 20-25 lbs with alky. I will not have the car at the track every weekend and as a matter of fact, after i take it there fot the first time, provided i dont break anything, it will probably be the last. So, i dont need a tranny that can handle 700HP but rather a tranny that will handle 550-600 and about 10 seconds of 700. Ive read alot of good things about tranny builders on this forum such as CK, PTS, dynotech, and century to name a few. Ide probably go with one of thoes guys and have everything done to it. So, what should i do? Im going to leave the 200 in for now untill i break it, so when it does should i build that or put a 4l80E whatever that is? Thanks alot. Ive got past the motor build part and im working my way down the drive trane. haha. Thanks alot everyone.

Hey Bill , is there any way you could PM me a rough list of what might be in my tranny? It was John Basillies sons car. Thanks alot.

if you can put a 4l80E in that would be awesome .I just thought it would be a bear to swap. I hear it needs a seperate computer or something. maybe diff mounts. I dont know what the ratios are in that transmission though. I know b&M has a tranny based off the 4l80E. If you have the money I say go for it!!!!!!

Let us know how it works out.

I would have no way of knowing what is in the trans as I dont really know when it was built, sorry.

turbo 400 + Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions.

IF I ever went to another trans that would be the one ... BUT it is a $$$$$ pit ... works great but the initial $$$ is big .. we are still pushing a 200 and have moved up to the billet parts from PTS  Bruce's parts were really nice !!! BUT you are pushing more power than we are ..

More than me? You went 10.10 correct? On a 3600 lb car thats close to 700 i think. Congrats by the way. Hopefully i can run that or better.

Awesome link Bill. I cant seem to find the TH400 with overdrive and know nothing about thoes gear ratio's or which one is good/will work the best. Do you have a link to the one i would be best off with? Thanks alot.

That's because a TH400 never had OD.

Go build the 2004R, if Jason Cramer can run it in his 9 sec TSM car, then you can too!

Go give a shout to a few of the trans guys on here. Bruce Toelle, Lonnie Diers, Mike Kurtz for a few to boot.

They'll give ya the right direction in what to do.

Bruce did my trans, and damn im already impressed with it, even before getting it in the car!
