So I send my PT-54 turbo to Precision to have it rebuilt due to some smoking under acceleration, and they email the shop that sent it in for me, claiming that its in "real bad shape" and they want $700 to fix it or sell me a "new style" one for $595. Is it just me or do they need to put down the drugs? This thing has less than 5000 miles on it, 1700 of that was breakin miles on a brand new motor. What should I do.....

this is my post from one of my other threads
Well I was doing some work on the car last night and had the turbo's inlet hose out so I decided to check for shaft play and I found allot of it, about 3/16-1/4 inch of in/out play.
I talked to a turbo shop this morning about it and they said that the turbo is in desperate need of a rebuild and it could start smoking real soon and even damage the housings and I would loose the core:redface: .
Anyway they told me a stock rebuild would be about $350.00
And a rebuild with a TE44 up grade would be about $695.00

Is it worth it to get the TE44 upgrade For $695.00?
or
Can I get a newer type turbo for about the same amount of money?

My goals are mid to high 11's on a REAL DD.
and this is why i will be buying a NEW turbo in a few days.

It should be under warranty but if you didnt have a Turbo Saver on the car, they probably wont honor said warranty. They have a 12 month warranty on turbos.

Maybe they mixed your up with another customer? I had one done last year and it was in the $300 range. Wheels were fine. Had a little thrust.
