Don't all Champion heads start life as 8 bolt raw castings? Then, in order to create 14 bolt heads, the rocker shaft towers are milled off and the heads otherwise machined for the additional head bolts and pedestal rockers?

If this is so, does it imply that Champion or any competent machine shop could convert 8 bolts heads into 14 bolt heads with little fanfare? Has anybody done this?

Thanks.

In a word, yup. Tom will do it if you send back your 8 bolt heads..I think he told me something like $75 (don't quote me on it, though). Considering the work necessary to mill the towers and then correctly locate the studs for the stud mount rockers, that would be a bargain.

Kendall,

Thanks, I thought so.

This sort of undermines the argument that 8 bolt heads are harder to re-sell.

So now, a guy can buy 8 bolt heads, get every gram of aluminum, forget about cracking, and not concern himself that he's "stuck" with them...

:)
