I need to replace the coil pack on my all stock 84 gn. It's my understanding they don't make replacement coil packs anymore for the 84/85's anymore. Will I have to buy a 86/87 coil pack and some kind of conversion kit? How would I tell if mines already been converted?

If it is the stock one it will have Computer Controlled Coil Ignition on it. New ones are very expensive around $500. If you need one try e bay and the parts for sale sections on the boards. Here is a pic of mine.
What type of problem are you having, there is a lot of help available here. It may be something else causing your problem.

The coil packs from an 87 will work. It just changes the fireing order. In other words you have to plug the wires under the coil pack slightly different from stock. I can't tell you off the top of my head but you just have to match up the same coils w/ the right plug wires. Later..Danny

go to autozone, get a wells made adapter to fit a 87 coil pack
onto an 84 module.you will need to use 84 firing order so
ignore the 87 coil numbers, i use the wells adapter on my 84

The wells adapter you are talking about is a physical adapter, not an electronic adapter correct? I didn't buy any kind of adapter when I did mine. I am sure I just winged it when it came to physically mateing the two together. It has been at least ten years since I last did mine. I had put an Accel replacement coil on it once, but I didn't think it worked as good as the stocker. Just about any with waste spark ignition's coils could be made to work in a pinch. What comes to mind is the v6 mustang coil packs. I have used the Ford coil packs on a number of high boost mitsubishi turbo cars. Sorry I am soooo old and can't remember things from that far back. Later....Danny

yes its a physical adapter as the 87 is shorter in length .
part # CB5
