Well, that still doesn't tell me much. IIRC the TH350 uses a band for manual second, and it's a fairly strong trans (even in stock form).
As I stated earlier. The 250 does NOT have second gear clutches. The band must do all the work, all the time. It's not that much surface area on the band and the servo is small; ie. low apply forces.

The 350 does, in fact, have a little band for manual second. It doesn't stop the drum during a manual 1-2 shift though. The clutches do. The band merely provides engine braking by preventing the roller clutch from overrunning.

To answer your other questions, yes, the speedometer gears and planetaries are the same.

Got it. The book I have wasn't specific, it simply said the TH350 used clutches for automatic second and a band for manual second. IMO it should have said it uses the band AND the clutches for manual second. Nor did it mention how small the band was either; if I'm not mistaken at least one gear in a 700R4 uses a band and it's in no danger from a stock 3.8L motor either.

I'm not an automatic transmission expert, nor do I play one on TV. :D

Thanks for the help.

And WE4, I don't know where you got the IROC reference, nor do I understand what you mean by it's "not any good for what I want". The Oldsmobile is NOT a performance car, I'm not planning on making it one (at least not with the current drivetrain). I just asked if the addition of the 4bbl manifold and Qjet vs the stock 2bbl stuff would increase the power enough to endanger the transmission. Swapping to a TH350C on a dailer beater with this little power seems like massive overkill to me.
