My tranny in my 86 GN is just about had it. It was about shot last year, before I pulled the motor and rebuilt it. Now, after I upgraded the motor (ported heads, ported intake, larger injectors, bored over, etc) it is done. Would it be better to actually rebuild the stock one, and upgrade it, or actually buy a tranny that's been tweaked?

Well, in a way, there isn't really a difference. That's because the end result of going either route will yield you a modified, GM 2004R.

In order to decide what's best for you, consider the following:
  • Do you have access to a competent local builder who knows 2004rs & will back his work?
  • Are you willing to rebuild the transmission yourself?
  • Consider that there will be shipping charges involved in any long-distance transmission transactions.
  • If you choose to buy one already built, you may have a core charge or need to send your transmission back for exchange. Alternatively, if you want to keep your numbers-matching transmission, you could send yours off to be rebuilt in lieu of exchanging it.

These are just a few things to consider. Do some homework, make some phone calls and weigh your options. Remember though, don't let the costs involved sway you away from quality work. Building one of these corectly involves quality components and even some special hard parts depending on your performance level. Just be sure you get what you pay for.
