Wassup everyone. I just checked out a 86 GN with t tops, rebuilt trans and turbo with about 100k miles on the car. 1 Accident on the title and says not qualified for Autocheck buyback due to"exceeds mechanical limits" but this could be a NY thing.

Body needs alot of work, but looks straight. There is some rust issues, I saw some by the t tops in the middle(flaking rust), I saw some a little bit higher than both door hinges(It looks like 2 sheets of metal meet). Lower rockers had a rust hole. There is rust spots all over the outer part of the car car but it looks to be surface rust, Front rad support looked bent on the drivers side, all valences are missing. Trunk weatherstripping area looked good. Pans "feel strong" just by hitting it with my foot, minor electrical problems, digital dash flickers, hvac doesnt work. Interior needs alot of work. Door gaps are uneven from driver to passenger(big door gap between qtr and door).

Does anyone have a diagram or specifics on where to check for main rust areas?

I would love to get a West coast GN but out of my budget.

I am in NY btw.

T-top rust can run very deep and be very expensive to repair.

That being said, I wouldn't buy another T-Top car..

I have to agree with Mark here. I've got one T top car because it's the only way it came for the 82 GN. That will be the only one I'll ever own also. The floor needs to be replaced on the pass side and the top has to come apart to repair it, but it's one of less than 300 ever produced and they won't be making any more. LOL It will have to have a full frame off to make it right, but it was made the year I graduated from high school so it's gonna be a very late graduation present for me.:)

The sellers asking price isn't too bad. But I have a feeling it would sooner or later need a full restore which I do not want to tackle.

Even if it was priced at $2K I wouldn't consider it. You have to tear the entire top apart to repair the rust. One of the guys in the resto section had a car that was so bad, when he took the top apart he leaned on the A pillar, breaking it and cracking the windsheild. This doesn't even consider the possible rust in the floor panels. Unless the car's from AZ and garage kept I wouldn't even think about it.:)
