Yahoo! The 85 runs good with the 86 intake and IC
installation done. Had to convert the brakes to hydoboost,
the PM crapped out. Just a bolt on, good brakes now!
Car runs super smooth with the new IC set up.
2 1/2 years, but finally on the road again!

How about some pix. I am still gathering parts for my conversion. I have a upper plenum to modify... Congradualations...

Can u give me some details on where i can get this setup. I'm looking to ad a intercooler myself using the 86 intake. Send some pics of yours if u can.

thanks

PS ... was it hard to do?

Did you change just the intake? Did you use the 86 turbo and exhaust as well? If not how did you mount the turbo?

Send me a parts list on what you had to switch over and any machining you had to do. I am very interested in this swap. What did the parts run you if you don't mind me asking. How about more pics please. Looks like this would make it easier to install a larger turbo and even relocate it if you wanted to.

Intake swap

I just finished putting on a 1987 intake and TA33 turbo with front mounted intercooler. Check the pictures on Webshots.com under MrBuick101 84 Buick GNX clone

Thats a nice intake. You said it's an 86/87 it looks just like the JS kit. What did you have to do to make the 86/87 intake work just drill a hole for the oil return line from the turbo? I would think that doing it your way would be cheaper and work just as well. Can you be more specific on what had to be done to the intake I'm thinking of doing a similar project.

87 Manifold

You need to make a oil drain back hole at the rear of the manifold, so the stock location 84-85 turbo will fit. The 87 thermostat housing needed to be cut and mated to the longer 84 housing. The alternator bracket needed to be cut to clear the throttle body. The stock wastegate canister to big to clear the throttle cable bracket, so I used the 84 canister bracket and mounted a smaller canister into it. The plenum needed to be cut at an angle to clear the turbo housing. After you make the cut take it to a professional welder or you will warp the housing. My welder made an aluminum plate and welded it for $50.00 You need to use the 1987 throttle cable, cruise cable, throttle body, IAC, TPS, water pump S-hose, PCV valve . You have to swap the wires on the 84-85 TPS plug to match the 1987 wiring of the 1987 TPS switch. Make your own 2.5" pipes to the intercooler. I decided to use a front mount intercooler GN1 performance $660.00 and it had some pipe with the kit, so I modified them. Hope that helps. You really need to Blanchard grind the face of the plenum
after welding it to get it flat. Even with fixturing the
plenum to weld, it will probably distort the face.
Better to be safe than have to tear it back apart to
get it ground flat. Neither of the 2 plenums I had
welded, (all by professionals), turned out to be flat.
Massive vacuum leaks resulted. My lesson learned.
