Hello all. I have to replace the a/c compressor in my 1998 infiniti QX4. I have not done any AC work in the past. How advanced is this install? Is it just a straight forward pull out the old and in with the new? I have a decent tool collection, are there any special tools needed? Do you guys know of a website where I could get some step by step instructions? I was planning on just ordering the compressor from an online ac shop, their prices seemed to be cheap ($315). The local shop wanted about $900 for parts and install and thought this was a total rip. Let me know what you think. thanks a lot in advance.

Adam,

I don't have any specific info relating to your car...most will not remember exactly the particulars of doing a compressor job on a QX4.

However, I will tell you that you need to replace the expansion valve/orifice tube, the compressor, and drier whenever doing a compressor job. Sometimes this is something that isn't too easy, but that depends on your mechanical abilities. Also, if you haven't done any A/C work before, it would be good to partner with someone who has.

Make sure to replace the above parts, flush out the system, and re-charge it with the proper amount of oil.

Good luck, and if I can help you in any way, please feel free to give me a call!

Also-our compressor is a little cheaper too, and I'd appreciate the business.

Also, $900 for a complete compressor job isn't out of the ordinary, especially for that car. It's truly a fair price. However, if you can do it yourself, you can save some money!

Also make sure that you pull a vacuum on the system before you charge it as well, you need to remove the moisture in the system.

Might want to find out what made the compressor fail - the same thing may ruin the new one.

Make sure that you use the correct oil that the compressor maker recommends.

Use new seals/o-rings on all fittings that you change.

I have only done A/C work on the GN and my Eagle talon - no experience on Infiniti to know if there is anything to watch out for.

great, thanks for the replies. The guy at the shop came down to $700 for parts and install, so I think I'm just gonna go with that. Thanks for all the advice.
