So here's the story. Back when I put my GN back together awhile back I blew out all the lines, put on new o rings, installed a new accumulator and orifice tube, and proceeded to charge with freeze 12. Now before anyone flames me for using freeze 12, I have to say I've used it on 2 other r12 systems and they are still working great years later.

So I jumped the low pressure switch and tried to charge, but I only got 10-12psi on the low side and the cold side line going into the evaporator was freezing up and the air coming out of the vents was warm. Unfortunately I don't have the right adapter for the high side, so I don't know what that pressure was.

Anyway, I assumed that maybe the evaporator was gummed up. It didn't matter at the time because I was pulling the car back apart for paint work, so I let it be. I just ordered a new OEM evaporator and orifice tube from nos4gn. Now I'm wondering if there was something else wrong?

Could I have had a faulty orifice tube? Did I possibly have too much oil in the system? Just looking to see if there is something I've missed. Thanks!

Usually when the line freezes there's either a blockage of some sort or low on refridgerant. You need to get a high pressure reading though so you know what's going on.

I have that gauge set already. The high side won't screw onto a R-12 system and I don't have an adaptor right now. I will look into the vacuum pump. I was able to get about 1 can in and it just would not take any more. At the time I was assuming that I had a blockage in the evaporator, but after pulling everything apart I can tell that is not the case. I went through and checked all the lines and condenser. No blockage. I think the issue is that my 12 year old Pep Boys compressor is shot. It sat for 6 years anyway and honestly never worked all that great in the first place. I should have known better than to use it. I think at this point I will same my pennies for a AC Delco unit and do it right. I'm not going to worry about it until the spring though. Thanks for all the advise.
