See that plug in the side of the drier? Remove it and stick the cotterpin in both the plug slots to jump it. Usually, when you have an empty system, when you install a can of "freon", enough goes in to make the compressor engage. Are you sure any is going in with the contraption you bought? I just have a hose, without a gauge, that installs on each can of freon as I put it into the system. If your system is empty, three cans of freon will fill it and give you cold AC unless you have some other problem. My comment about the JB Weld was only made to illustrate you were going for the cheapest fix possible. Nothing wrong with that.
