Recruiting and retention have been so good as of late, you might not get to keep your old MOS, based on needs of the Army. The possibility exists you may not get your old rank back either.
Really the Army hasn't changed much other than uniforms, the people in it have. But the operaions tempo is train, train, deploy with about a year between deployments if you end up at Campbell, Bragg, Drum, little longer at other places, but not much. Because of the optempo, you have lots of guys running around with a lot of combat experience. Nothing anymore to a SFC (E-7) with 7 or 8 years time in service. If they can do the job while deployed, why shouldn't they be promoted right? Just remember age does not equal rank if you do decide to go back in. Check out a pay chart, you might be surprised what active duty pay is nowadays.
If you were an officer it is even better. Don't quote me on this but 96% selection rate to CPT, 84% selection rate to MAJ, and 76% selection rate to LTC. Obviously it varies by branch, but unless you with your own hand kill someone in your own command, you will get promoted.
If you have any specific questions just ask here or via pm.

I'm figuring something 63 series as I did crosstrain as a 63S and I am an ase master mechanic. The entire time i've been out i've ran garages, so I'm hoping this will help. Light wheel vehicle mechanic poss.Im certainly not up to date on what the needs of the current army are regarding turret mechanics. There has been a focus as of late for moving away from heavy armor, but the army still needs it's tanks. Talk to a recruiter and see what they say. I know a lot of the bonuses have been cut back for enlistment and re-enlistment. I know lots of guys that got out right before ten years that regret but it is a personal choice.
The 63 series is now 91. So you would be looking into a 91B for a light wheeled vehicle mechanic. If you want to get in, I would do it soon. Last year Florida stopped recruiting from July to September. Usually, the only way you will get a bonus is if you come in as E-4 and are MOSQ'ed for what you are coming in for.
Ithought 91 series used to be medical, like medic. I had to order a DD214, WOW 80 bucksThe 63 series is now 91. So you would be looking into a 91B for a light wheeled vehicle mechanic. It was a career of pride. It is not anymore.
As of now, the only places that still maintain ANY hint of discipline, are the airborne infantry, lrrp, ranger, and SF units.![]()
Got my DD214 and interviewed with a recruiter yesterday. Did the whole 20 question, height/weight, blah, blah blah now they won't leave me alone!! Man, after 20years, they still promise you you world!!! You will make rank quickly, eligible for warrant school!!!
Told me 34 pushups 38 situps and 18:18 on the run for my age. Heck I could have walked the 2mi that fast!!! Soooo The first I start busting azz!!! I don't know if I'll go agr or active duty yet, but I'm motivated to do something!! The things turbosmackdown are what I see out here and discust me!! I own a garage and can't even find anyone with good work ethic that will show up to work on time!! They think it's no big deal! After 12years out It's starting to affect my attitude! Be where your supposed to be doing what your supposed to be doing when and how your supposed to be doing it!! Some of these guys will spend more time and effort trying to get out of working than just getting it done!!Warrant school is not so hard to get. My station put in a guy who was infantry, then got out and was a security guard for a night club in vegas. It was wierd saluting him when he came back to the office wth the little black square on his chest. Also two guys I deployed with in 04 are now apache pilots. So warrant school isn't a fairy tale, it will take some effort on your part if you want it.
And yes the Army is changing. During recruiting school a drill Sgt. got in my face becuase I tried to correct a female soldier for not wearing her beret and to top it off she had on some hot pink sun glasses. He was saying to stay in my lane blah blah. I told him I had 18 seconds to unf*ck what he took 18 weeks to f*ck up. My lil bro agrees that the Army is soft now. He just came back from boot and said it was cake and didn't like how fattys failed the PT test and their Dsgt. still passed them with a minimum score.
Reeeaally now... bro, you're going to see ALLL SORTS of that bulls **** in todays army.Told me 34 pushups 38 situps and 18:18 on the run for my age. Heck I could have walked the 2mi that fast!!! I really hope your wrong cause my cocrans were spit shined and bdu's had a starched knife edge on them. It was kinda expected of nco's when I was in, even if you were a tank mechanic!!! It just makes you stand tall and be proud of the uniform!! Funny thing, The staff seargent that I'm dealing with has said "bro or bra" more than once! Now I've never been a recruiter, but and nco in uniform saying bro or bra?? Just hit me kinda funny!!!Reeeaally now... bro, you're going to see ALLL SORTS of that bulls **** in todays army.
And what rank and status am I Joe snuffy? That's completely irrelevant, and has nothing to do with what I've seen. I prefer to keep most of my personal life private, as I've seen some funny stuff go down over the internet.
I've served all over the world, along side of all 3 other services, to include training, and training with, 13 other militarys from other countries, and what I say is the truth. I'm not meaning to insult you in the least, but maybe you don't see these gross violations of discipline, because we may have different views of what real discipline is. I've been combat arms for 15 years, and I can tell you, things have REALLY changed.
I just got back from a tour in Africa, where it was a pretty even mix of Air Force, Marines, and Naval personnel, and I have NEVER, EVER seen such filth in my life. Every single latrine, was completely trashed, DAILY. Crap all over the floors, broken mirrors constantly, and the grafitti on the walls was just out of control. (honestly... grafitti?? how old are we again?) Joes would throw trash all over the ground, all day long, without a care in the world. Joes would walk around, in broad day light, in front of God and everybody, with IPOD EAR PHONES in their ears, IN UNIFORM. They did this, because they didn't fear any repercussions. Because there WERE no repercussions. They would literally, get up in the chow hall after eating, and leave their empty coke cans, and dirty napkins, right there on the table. Sailors and soldiers, would wear their headgear, cocked back on their heads, as if they were on their way to a tractor pull. They would wear sunglasses that were OBVIOUSLY out of regulation, like they were walking on a runway at a fashion show. People walking around, like 25 POUNDS overweight. No, this isn't a little chub that was put on inadvertently. This was OBVIOUSLY, YEARS of pencil whipping these fools' PT test cards. There's no FREAKING WAY IN HELL, ANY of those morons passed a real PT test, ANYWHERE in the last 3 years. NO WAY MAN. I'd bet my buick on it! They don't fear failing, because there's no ramifications now. Because if there was, they wouldn't tempt it. And this wasn't oneseys and twoseys. This was 30-40 people on post man, and I'm not exaggerating one bit.
I was recently at a post, that had some advanced individual trainees there, attending classes. These kids would have AD's (accidental discharges) CONSTANTLY, (with blanks) and then, they would laugh at them. UNBELIEVABLE. My jaw was on the ground constantly. Nothing happened to them. Ever. (and you should see how they talk to their platoon sergeants)
Do you realize what would happen to me, if I was walking around in uniform, with walkman headphones on??? You wouldn't walk straight for a MONTH. In addition to the bruises you'd have all over your body. I couldn't IMAGINE, doing something that BLATANTLY ****ED UP, in broad daylight.
This was just a minor percentage, of the examples I could give to you. All I see, when I walk around a post, is kids. Kids, walking around, with earphones in their ears, and texting on their stupidass cell phones. In uniform. This isn't the Army. This is the freaking boy scouts.
If these little bastards, spoke back to their superiors like they do now, back in the day, they'd get a beat down soo fierce, they'd NEVER do that again. EVER. You can bet your backside on that one.
My team leader, was getting out of the shower, and the floor had about 1 inch of water built up in it. He was like "wtf??". It was this stupid ass airman, showering with the shower curtain outside of the shower. Just like the HUGE SIGN in the shower trailer specifically said NOT TO DO, BECAUSE IT FLOODS THE SHOWERS. So my team leader said "HEY, PUT THAT SHOWER CURTAIN BACK IN THE ****IN SHOWER! YOU'RE FLOODING THE SHOWERS MAN!" This guy remains silent, as if he ignores him, maybe he'll just go away. Wrong move ignoring an infantryman. Then he shouts louder. The airman replies "I'm not doing it. I don't want that dirty curtain to touch my back when I'm showering..." lol. So my boss waits till he get's done, and reams him a new *******. Balls him out up one side, and down the other. And said "If I see you do that again when I'm in here, I'm going to beat your little ass, do you understand me??"
That wasn't the first, nor the last time he went ballistic on someone on post. What in the holy hell, would possess someone, to mouth off like that, to someone that they had no clue what rank they were?? He's a pretty high rank, but, what if he was, for example, a captain? Then what? Wasn't that guy scared, of the consequences? Nope. Not one iota. Because there IS no consequences.. That's why.
It was rampant in Iraq too. Trust me, if you were in the combat arms, in the early 90s, or earlier, you'd see what I'm seeing. Because todays discipline, is simply non existent. It's a WAYYY softer, more tolerant Army now, and it sucks, because it used to be pretty cool lol.
Hell, even in my unit just 3 years ago, you'd catch an awfully nasty beat down, if you mouthed off to someone like these kids do now.
Absolutely zero pride. Everything is handed to you now. No spitshining of ANY footgear. No ironing of uniforms, no shining of medals or awards/buttons on the class A uniforms, corofram dress shoes are standard issue. These kids don't have to do ANYthing these days. No room inspections, nothin. They get allll the latest and greatest equipment, and then never learn how to use it. Then either abuse or lose it afterwards lol.
And then they lower the pt test minimums for basic training too. Now, they're pushing their pt failures out of basic, and right into permanent party. How in the HELL, do you pass an army pt test, with a 50 PERCENT????? Who knows, but they're doing it... You can't swear AT, or IN FRONT of trainees now, and the muslims can wear their religious headgear, IN UNIFORM too. If you tried that in my last unit, you wouldn't make it past the first day lol. Guaranteed.
This female soldier, was wearing her muslim headgear (FULL head wrap) while indoors, during a briefing. The first words out of this colonels mouth was "is that authorized???" She said yes, and he never questioned it... Why? Because it would have gone nowhere anyhow... Me and my teamleader looked that reg up IMMEDIATELY after that briefing, and it was indeed NOT authorized. The only way it would have been authorized, was if her issue headgear would completely conceal it, while worn. This was a FULL HEADWRAP, that was obviously not authorized, and she had to have known that, from reading the reg...but she did it anyways... No discipline. Whatsoever.. It's gone too far in my opinion...
As you can see, I'm pretty passionate about my military. All I want, is for it to be done right. I was soo gung ho, and to see it all degraded pisses me off. It was a huge part of my life and everything I was, and did, was centered around it. The army was my entire life... And now, it's full of liberals, that are ruining it. And I can't stand it anymore. It's wronger than 2 boys ****in.
