Advancing a cam and gaining HSP?

Anyone ever advance a cam and pick HSP? I know that the general rule of thumb is advancing a cam moves the power band lower and drops the center line of the cam and retarding it moves up the powerband and increases the center line. But what about actually picking up HSP from doing one or the other. How does the converter and what the heads flow play into the equation?? I know the general idea behind this also, just want to hear other peoples opinion, idea's, experiences.
