my 85 alternator went out local az dont have one in stock. is there another gm that will fit in the spot? with out to much hassel

Thanx Jay

it just uses a regular alternator just like pretty much every other GM car from that time period that didn't have the HD alternator.
so, ask for one for a regular Regal- or even a Monte SS or something. worst case scenario, you might have to "re-clock" it by taking out the 4 bolts around the outside and twisting the case.
if they don't stock that alternator, you need to find a different place to shop. it is about as common as valve cover gaskets for a small block Chevy.
also, make sure your alt is bad, and that you don't just have a dead "volt" light bulb in the dash, or a bad connection where the cluster plugs in.

i read on another post the alt from a caddy 4.9 would work. but i want one for the bracket i thought i read where people are moding there stuff to fit other alts from various cars.

The 84/85 TR alternator is not the same as the NA Regal, Monte SS, etc.
The casing is the same old si style but oe is a higher amp alt. If you get one from a NA carb car they will likely only be 63~ amp (?). Our OE alts are 94 amp. We have much more going on electricaly than the other engine options in '84-'85.
AutoZone offers the correct alternator (#DL7294-6) with a Lifetime warranty for about $100. It is a order item which if I remember correctly usually only takes a day or two.
Over the years Ive used the part #DL7294 alt that my '84 Suburban uses(was in stock for $75). It is the same 94 amp alt but just needs to be reclocked (very easy to do). The "-6" at the end of the TR part # just indicates how it is clocked. That is why those arent in stock (they are probably only clocked that way for our cars).
You can put that DL7294 alternator under warranty for your vehicle. Doesnt have to be under Suburban, etc.
