I might swap a digital dash set up into the elky, and I'm wondering if the wiring going to the fuel tank is different in the analog set up than the digital set up? I know the inside wiring is different, but unsure about the rest. thanks...

I swapped from an analog to a digital dash and the wiring worked fine.

do you mean you swapped the interrior harness and left the tank/rear light harness, or just swapped the analog cluster for a digital cluster without changing anything?? thanks bud.

cool. I thought it was, but always seem'd to see people selling different fuel sending units for digital dash or analog. thanks.

There is a difference in the sending units but you can use either one. Its best to use the digital over the analog if you're interested in accuracy. In other words if you use the digital with an analog gauge it will read a little lower than what is actually in the tank. When the needle is on empty there will be a gallon or two left. If you use the analog unit with a digital gauge than you'll be on fumes before the needle hits the empty mark.

cool to know, thanks. The only thing is the elky's did'nt have digital gauges, nor did they have the digital sending unit. I plan on swapping out the analog dash for digital, but cant use the sending unit as it sits different in the tank, and the float hits up on the baffling. But I try to keep alot of gas anyways:D thanks again though, now I know when I sell both units;)

Try to find a sending unit from a 85-87 ElCamino/Caballero with the FI 4.3 V-6. That one has a fuel pump mounted to it. Watch out. There are two tank sizes. One is 18 Gal and one is 22 gal. The sending units are different between the two two tank sizes.

thats funny you mention. I've always ran a carb'd tank and the 87 gn sending unit put in there the wrong way, but it worked fine. Those tanks you speak of are VERY VERY VERY hard to find as not many of those elky's were made, and if you find them in the junk yard, you better grab one and repair the hole they make in the bottom!! those things are like GOLD:eek: I tried buying a new one, came with no baffle in it, hit up the local RARE el camino's in Inglewood who supplies thousands of elky's, and specializes in it for a living, and he did'nt have one, and he rarely did. one day I was browsing in the junk yard, and there was an elky with a gas tank in the bed, I peeked, and BOOOOM there it was lol:eek: :D  :D thats how excited I was. even had the sending unit, and those things come with a fitting on the sending line too:cool: much better design'd than the gn for some reason, and I paid 30 bucks for the tank and sending unit, they did'nt charge for the sending unit:biggrin: this just happened a few months ago, so hav'nt had a chance to drop it in yet, but am excited every time I go in the garage and see it......sorry for the long story:biggrin:

I know what you mean about the hole in the tanks. Funny thing. LKQ is buying up all of the U-Pull-Its in FL and the southeast USA. About 2 or 3 times a year they have a deal where if you fill out one of their surveys you get a chance to win some contest. At the bottom of the page they ask what you would like to see them improve. I always write in that they need to stop F'n up the parts that are damn near impossible to find. And I write on the back of the page too. I even make sure to write F'n as many times. You cant find a good rear axle cover, PS pump, gas tank, tranny pan or MC. Let alone a molded radiator hose. Plus they need to stop screwing up the sheet metal by running holes in it with the fork lift.

Sending units shouldn't hard to find and you can buy new tanks through the aftermarket. I've got one yard in the area that specializes in hoarding ElCaminos and other G-bodies. The bad thing is that they think this stuff is worth its weight in gold.

exactly! i'm suprised more people hav'nt read this and ranted too:D but the aftermarket tanks dont have the proper plastic baffling. I've bought one new, and the part number for a fuel injected tank is the same for the carb'd tank. when I called the manufacturer, I pointed it out and they were confused:eek:
