Ok, here it goes. Start the car up. Everything's fine. I get in it and go. It runs great until I get about 3-4 miles down the road. I'm cruising at 45-50 mph. The car starts to hesitate, backfire, sputter, and finally shuts off. Then I start it back up, and everything's fine for another 3-4 miles again. Then, the same thing again. Once I get into town, it runs fine. It only acts up when I'm driving at a steady speed. I get no check engine light when this happens. At least it hasn't left me stranded, yet.
This is what Iv'e done to try to fix it so far:
known good coilpacks and module
known good maf
rebuilt alternator
removed RA voltbooster (thought it was bad causing my battery to overcharge)
known good crank and cam sensors

Any ideas anyone. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh, almost forgot, this is on my 160k mile 87 T.

Hey TURBOTIMMER,

If you ever figure out the problem, let me know.... I can drive for about an hour on the hwy at about 60+ mph and then, the car sputters, hesitates and dies (no code). After a cool-down... it'll drive but not as long!! I can drive throughout the city (30-40mph) for hours... and not a single problem!!

I was thinking fuel pump... It must be something mechanical that gets hot and quits!!! I've also changed coil/module, and MAF.

Does your fan wire get hot??? My fan seems to be running all the time and the wires get pretty hot. I was thinking the temperature sensor might trigger something in the ECM. I'm at a loss.... I would like to be able to drive more than an hour without the car dying!!

good luck....

TURBOTIMMER, something similar to that happened to me once and it turned out to be a bad oxygen sensor...Just a thought...
'bye! Claude.

Update guys

Well, I unhooked the hotwire to the fuel pump, and I haven't had the car stall since. I've only driven for about 20 miles, but it usually acts up by now. I'm now confident the problem is fuel related.

Thanks for all your input guys. I probably should have replaced the $4 fuel filter before borrowing all the stuff off my GN:rolleyes:

I'll keep you all posted with my findings.

Tim:)

Did your fuel pressure gauge give any indication? My friend has some problems going on with his car and it sounds along the same lines just not as bad. I guess I will tell him to put one in JFTHOI.

That's the thing. It didn't show up on the fp gauge. That's why I thought I had a much more complicated problem.

Good luck with your friend's car.

Spring cleaning works! He is a tight-ass so getting him to do the things in order so you aren't chasing your tail is hard! When I get a car it gets a new filter, plugs, wires, etc... He is working it backwards which makes it hard on me since he is new to the TR world:)

If its a never opened 160k motor , id bet your timming chain and gear is going , id seriously look into that if it has never been changed. My old GN did that for a few days before it finally died and thta was the problem it chewed all the teeth off the gear. LOOK OUT!
