Thinking of going to a lockup converter and have heard some good things about the 911. My question is how do they perform/holdup to higher hp cars.

Like some input from 10.50 @ 130mph car...or in that range.

Anyone suggest another converter?

not that the 9/11 isn't capable of the times you mentioned, but I sorta doubt you will find anybody at that speed using that converter (mainly because cars at that speed, with a few exceptions, run TH-400's that have non lock converters)

if you want to go that fast, there are a lot of choices out there that all cost roughly twice what the 9/11 costs...non locks are less and many use them at the 10 sec level

It really depends on how fast you wanna go and whether you drive on the street

I posed this same question to Bruce before buying mine. I think my car is 10.60 capable and i was looking for a reasonably priced custom converter. I told him I was looking at running the converter locked to see how it worked for my car. He told me to not even worry about the durabilty and give it hell.

Bruce told me the same thing, but I'd like to have some input from those that have done it.

I realize there are several choices and would like to know which work. I want to be able to spool my PT68, but also have the top end efficiecy that I can't seem to get with the nonloc converters I've tried.

My car dynos 558 rwhp, so I feel the numbers I posted are reasonable and obviously what I would like to run.

I do drive my car on the street but not to work or the mall. We do alot of street racing, which I'm sure you all do also, so the street driving I do is really street racing from a 25 or so roll.

Ive tried the AC 16930 and a Yank turbo thruster...both either spool great but are too loose on the top, or take for ever to spoll and pull great on the big end.

The majority of my racing is on the street with a 25mph rolling start...thats what the following combo is used for:

GN1s, pt68qtrim, 218/212 roller, 83# w/ FAST, FMIC, ect with the basics.

I went 11.14 on the first race tune pass on my car but that doesn't help you since you are looking for 11.00 and faster

isnt 10s on the street a lil bit much??? Maybe a bit dangerous as well? Must be some fierce competition in NC cuz 11.5 whips most things on the street where i live(chicago).

I use the multi-clutch Precision 9" and it works just fine...about 3600 stall.....locks extremely hard (like another gear)

I guess everything is relative as to what is a bit much or dangerous. My question was not to critique my combo for street use, but who had actual experience with a similar setup that could give me guidance with picking a converter.

AZ...how many disc does your PI converter have? What pump?
Thanks for your help.

Has anyone experienced the Yank lockups?

"6" pump......5 disc I generally launch off the t-brake at 4,000 rpm with this converter and lock it in third gear at about 5000 rpm

what part are you from in nc i stay in spring hope NC 20 min from raleigh my car is runinng good at a 11.48 at 116 mph i had a orange strip in it and i think the liner in the converter has been messed up know i have no loc up i have taled to bruce and he said thay where good but i dont know let us know rick

Is it really safe to lock up the convertor on a car that has enough power to run 10's?? I mean, even in 3rd gear has got to be hard on the engine and trans. I am not saying this to put anyone, I am asking this just for basic knowledge.

I dunno about "safe" and no doubt it puts some strain on things....much faster than my car (say mid 10's) I would prolly go with a non lock and 29" tires......locking at higher rpm doesn't seem to cause any problems and lowers my trap rpm considerably...unlocked, my PI would put me thru the traps at close to 5800 at 124 mph (28" tires)...I like it better going thru at 5100

a tighter non-lock is the alternative, but there goes a lot of street utility....everything is a compromise when you want the best of all worlds......a 10 sec car that is useable on the street is sorta rare, but there are a quite a few TR's out there that are in that catagory

BTW, try and lock a PI converter at the get go, and you'll be picking up pieces of your trans when it shifts into 2nd....ask me how I know:D

:D welcome to the east coast..thee are some fast steet cars out here.. i know of several 10 second cars around here and even a handfull of 9 second cars that cruize out on weekends.

and well since your not getting proven 10 second cars with a 9-11 i guess i'll thru in that im running one and expect that if my turbo(s) would have stayed together then i would have went in the 125 mph range maybe a lil bit more and i locked the converter in 2nd gear on the street several times pushing 26# in race trim which i didnt get a timeslip for but the one untuned pass i got with the 49 turbo was 121.54 mph and it felt way way faster than when i ran that pass.

my car currently weighs just a few #'s under 3700 with me and 1/2 tank of 116.

and my 121.54 pass was with a stock converter locked in 3rd and od since i was on 26" tires

wait a month until I get something other than 26" tires and higher than 21# of boost and I will have your answer

This isn't what you asked for in your post, but it is related.

I used a 9-11 converter in the 700r4 in my Syclone, of the same design that Bruce sells I'm almost positive (we discussed it before). I ran many low 11 sec times (couple 11-oh best ET), with many passes with trap speeds in the 120-126mph range. Locked it up every pass, with no problem. The lockup felt *very* strong on every run, never had any problems, all the way up until the day my oil pump pickup fell out

Those trap speeds would put a Buick with slicks in the 10 sec range for sure. This was in a full weight Syclone btw, 3800lb or so (never weighed).

Thought I'd post my experiences

I understand its a TCS converter...Had you run a nonlock in the Syclone before the 911 for any comparison?

No I didn't. The converter was a TCS design for sure.

I did make a couple passes w/o locking the converter (forgot to hit the switch). Lost 2-3mph, maybe a tenth in ET. I locked it because I wanted to keep the RPM down (hit 6100 through the traps, wanted to stay 5500 or so as I was still using GM rods).

I know Kendal Fredrick is putting a 911 in his Stage T. He's still in the assembly process, but when finished, he'll have plenty of input on this converter.
Look up his posts in the Stage section of this board.

The stage car isn't getting a 9/11. It's getting a 400 and a non-lock. I am looking to pick up another 9/11 for my GN, however. I had one in it for a few months, in what I hoped was a 10 second capable combination, and it performed beautifully. Since the car never got that 10 second slip, I should probably keep my mouth shut though. :)
