I was just wondering how many people in here is employed in the computer field, weather it be government or private. I myself am employed at Northrop Grumman as a Systems Intergrator down here in Reston VA.

Yeah I'm an IT guy. Left private industry about 6 mos ago, and now work for the school district in my county. Got 6 schools that I'm responsible for in terms of technology. Gotta go back to work next week after having a week off for Spring break, uhh tommorow is gonna suck:(

Wow responsible for six schools huh, sounds pretty high maintenance. I bet you bank big time ;)

I've been a computer techie since '89 when I went to work for IBM have a BS degree in Computer Science Engineering, now I'm part owner of my own consulting firm specializing in EDI software applications and integration of those apps to customer's existing systems. Mainly AS/400 and mainframe OS/390 apps.

Cool 2quick6, I'm 21 and already me and some friends are thinking of a way to break free from our bosses and jobs such as you did and becoming an entrepreneur. My buddies and I were thinking about starting our own ISP, our idea is providing Wireless connection. We have the plan already on down as to how we're going to accomplish this. Any tips on how to receive assistace for funding?

We kind of got lucky, it all started because about 5 of us left IBM together and went to work for a smaller company with less corporate crap, it turned out they were not intered in projects that were under $10k for consulting, so any project that was under $10k, we started doing on our own, suddenly a 2-day contract turned into a full year so we all quit and started our business, 3 of us. We still had lot of contacts for the various companies we worked for in the past and they send us any EDI business that they can't do themselves. And that 2 -day contract...been 3 years and they still have 8 of our employess working for them, including myself full time. Be sure at least one of your partners has alot of business savy and all must be good balance of sales and talking to people as well as techie skills. There's a ton of folks that are real techie or real sales people, but don't have both skills. And make sure all of you have the same work ethic...otherwise you'll get discouraged of your partners real quick, it requires lots of overtime hours...full time with clients...and then off time to manage/run the business.

Thanks for your input 2Quick, my partners i've known for 10yrs so i think i have the trust and reliability factor covered. I do underestand it takes alot pf hard work and long hours, but it does pay off in the end right.....
