Thinking about going with the group purchase smc alky injection.
Steve made it sound like the hot airs don't get quite the increase in boost as ic's. Also about $60 extra for a selenoid and extra hose. Anyone have this setup and impressed with it. Or should I hold out for the v2?
Thanks

Although I don't have personal experience on a hotair, I would think it would make more of a difference with no intercooler.

When you find out let me know , i hate to buy cam2 when i want to turn boost up , at 3.75 to 7.00 here for cam2 i think i'll save for the kit two. I to would think it would work better on the hot air .

take care

i heard from local buick shop that they could never get it to work right on a hot air car something about vac. problem thats why i didnt go with it

I have the SMC kit and was very happy with it. I don't know why more hot-airs don't use it. I was able to run 17 pds of boost with a 25 degree timing chip. With no alky I could only run 11 pds of boost. I had to get an extra check valve from Steve because vacuum would suck out the alky in the line. Once I put that on it worked awesome. You have to install the nozzle in the turbo adaptor. I know someone just tried installing a homemade kit into the intake side of the turbo and it doesn't work.
Hope this helps

Thanks guys,
Turbowrenchhead is saying what Steve told me. You need the extra selenoid to handle the vacuum. If I could get 3 to 4 pounds of boost, I'll probably go for it. I just have to get this tuned better before I add anymore mods. I probably need to post my turbolink numbers to see if some one could help this tuning rookie. I seems like my numbers jump all over the place.
BTW Steve sure seemed to be a good guy He gave me some honest advice and just didn't try to push his product.

Although it is not an SMC kit, I recently installed an alky kit on my car. before the alcohol, I could sustain no more than 14 psi on pump gas. With the alcohol injector installed, I have hit over 20 psi for extended periods. I am using a self-made kit consisting of a nitrous fan spray nozzle and jet, an old electric fuel pump, a small adjustment valve, an aftermarket overflow tank, a hobbs adjustable pressure switch, and some 5/16 fuel hose and fittings. It is a very basic system which sprays a water and alcohol mixture into the intake pipe, just after the MAF sensor, and before the throttle body. It takes a little time to get it tuned, but once it is, it works great. From what I've read, the gains I have seen are similar to the IC cars.

I believe that you would see better results with the injector installed after the turbo. Just my opion.

Thats been kicked around... any "best" places to try it? I dont have one of these but seems like the intake design might give a little grief on location? Goin from memory and it isnt that good. LOL

This Winters Goal

I will have the SMC kit on my car by spring, so will a friend of mine putting a hot-air drivetrain in his Wrangler.

I thought spraying alky before the turbo was a no-no, or I would have been spraying long ago.

The V3 makes it easy to do, and I'm afraid all the Avi fuel I've used the last 2 years is going to leave to many deposits. (I put 93 in once on a trip the last two summers, my boost is always at 20+ ).

alky on hot-air

They are exactly right, you have to add an additional pump from Steve. Me and my son did that because it was sucking all the alky without it. You have to have your vacume below the turbo near the adapter for it to work. Good luck. Tony

Hey Stage2,
What kind of boost are you running now with the alky? I've had to turn my down to keep it from knocking and it spools up real slow now. I'm sure an extra 3 or 4 pounds would help a lot.

get a nozzle that will screw into the side of the turbo (where the stud is) and go wild.. you dont need that extra mounting point anyway if you have an ATR DP..

why would a hotair suck more than a IC car? im not saying its not true... just curious... isnt there a webpage for the kit? lemme know the url..

20 psi also you must use a check valve to keep the your Hot-Air
motor from sucking the alky at idle (otherwise) It will be in your oil.

I run a homemade alky kit on my 85 GN and run 18psi without it and 25psi with it. 0.0 knock thru an entire 1/4 run. Mine is setup on the intake side of the turbo and I don't have any spoolup problems with this setup. (having injector problems now) Mine doesn't suck any alky out of the bottle and the resevoir holds about 1/2 gallon and last about 8-10 runs. Another TR guy here has run his on the inlet side for over 3 years and has over 200,000 miles on his turbo (3rd engine) without problems. It can work. I do use a Hobbs switch to kick it on at 10psi boost
