Woke up this morning, no heat..Yes, it's still cold up here in NH at night, gets in the lower 30s. Anyways, Carrier 9200 FHA furnace, turn on the tstat, calls for heat, blower starts..no flame, flashes error code. I looked up the code, says reset or replace rollout switch but I can't find the procedure how to reset it. Anyone familar w/how to do this on a Carrier furnace?
Any HVAC people in the house?

Somehwere near the burners or burner chamber will be a small plastic sensor, it will have 2 wires going to it most likely, and there may be 2,3, or more of these same switches. If they are resetable, there will be a small button in the center that can be pushed to reset it. If theres no button, it needs replaced. The real question is why did it trip?

Working...reset it by jumpering out 2 pins, went through a self test and it's working fine. Buddy said it could been a backdraft down the vent or something and the system went into like a safety shutdown mode....working now, see if it happens again.

Joe flame roll out is caused by either a downdraft in the flue,a blocked flue ,a sooted up heat exchanger (not likely)
most common is a lack of combustion air ierunning bath fan hood vent dryer and no make up air for the furnace .It is code to have 4 sq in per 1000 btu r 50 sq ft of open area per 1000 btuh.Good luck and good job Sam explaining to you.

I just realized that was a 90+ high efficiency furnace, check to see if theres anything blocking the inlet air (combustion air) pipe, if it has 2 pipes. These are 2" or 3" PVC pipes, one will be blowing one will be drawing air.

I don't deal with carrier, the company I work for sells trane furnaces.... if it's a new furnace, or especially a 90% effiecient unit, there is no pilot, hence nothing to "blow out". You would have to have a tremendous amount of air down that pvc flue to put out all the burners, not gonna happen. I am just an installer, but I have been doing this a long time and it sound to me that if you have no flame rollout(burner ignition) then you might have a bad limit switch. I wish I was familiar with carrier, but other than huge 80 ton units, I have never put one in someone's home. Like someone said, check for blockage in the intake, that or your furnace needs to have the burners cleaned and the unit serviced. Good luck.
A downdraft would open pressure switch and shut burners off before any flame rollout. If furnace was installed in a closet without enough combustion air it could get hot enough to trip a rollout. Could also be an internal problem with the main circiut board also. I replaced a few Carrier boards this winter. I think they were flashing an error code for open limit or rollout but none of the limits were actually open. A quicker way to reset furnace is to turn power off and back on. Ever thought of upgrading to a Trane.
I thought about not enough combustion air too.I actually work in the engineering lab at the company that makes those, the boards & stats are made here in town and the furnaces are made in Indy. I don't work on the residential stuff (commercial here) but I asked one of the engineers about this today. We looked for that model in the lab but don't have one that old around. I was going to snap a pic to show you what to look for. He basically said what everyone else has already said. The frs's I saw were 2 wire with a red plastic button to reset.

It's very rare to have flame rollout on an induced draft furnace.Any problems with the flue would be caught by the pressure switches before any rollout happened. Same thing for cracked heat exchanger. I'd say it's overheating, bad board or rollout switch.
Actually I see tripped rollouts alot here in the winter when snow and ice get accumulated in the inlet pipe and its open enough to close the pressure switch but isn't able to maintain flow.
I also see rollout switches not all the way pushed in from the factory, unit runs fine for awhile then intermittently sets an open rollout code, push reset all the way in and unit is fine.
I've been running service calls for almost 10 years, trust me, all kinds of weird crap happens!
