I'm looking to replace two units, I have a duplex, with two separate HVAC systems. I currently have two units (approx 18 yrs old) Dettson units made by Goodman mdl GMP075-3 (80 % eff.). I have had issues with them over the years, namley control boards and an ignitor or two. I had the annual inspection done by a local company and was told that it looks as if both might have a crack in the heat exchangers, one may have lost an eye let which holds a rivet together. The heat exchangers look as new from what I can see. Not sure if this might be a sales gimmick.

I got a second opinion, from a GAS tech, installer (certified) which I know, he brought over some meters, did not detect any CO, could not find any evidence of cracking (flame distortion, or obvious carbon marks etc...). I presently also have 4 new CO detectors throughout the home and none have caused me any alarm.

I had been planning to change the units in Feb 2013, I was looking at 95% efficiency, nothing really fancy, each unit is only about 1250 sq.ft. to look after. Do I go with a variable speed DC blower motor, dual stage and particular brand to stay away from. (both units have central a/c as well).

I live in eastern Ontario Canada, it gets cold. The GAS tech said he can get Keeprite, Payne, Rheem, and a Lennox line, he advised that Lennox has caused him issues with parts availability recently. KeepRite and Payne are popular up here. His cost on these furnaces is between 900-1200$ which is not a huge difference. I'm basically paying for all parts and materials at his cost and my buddy will install.

Any thoughts, just curious.
