I see there are quite a few manufacurers for low first gearsets for the 400. Anybody have any news to report on how well they work? I was thinking of a 2.98:1 gearset.

I'm figuring, in my case, a wide ratio gearset is worth close to a tenth off the 60', will get me past the 1-2 shift quicker so that I can ramp the boost level up sooner in the run, and will decrease the 1/8 mark ET by a little over one tenth.

Don,
The low gearsets are usually only good to about 700 HP.
The larger ring gear has to be machined thinner and or the rear carrier to be bored larger for fitment.

At your power level most guys go to a 2.10 gearset for better traction and ratio changes.

I have an 8 pinion 2.75 set and a 3.06 4 pinion set from Kilgore. John Kilgore is down there in Burbank. Might be worth a call.
I have never had one fail and we used to put them in those big heavy g vans for moving the weight. So they can take a beating.

Anyway, just thought I would chime in. BTW: how have you and the "boss" been? Haven't seen you in a while.
Tell her and all down there, Hello from Cindy and I.

My case at the line is a little unique. The car is leaving the line on nitrous only. At the most, maybe along with 1 1/2 to 2 psi boost. Even with the wide ratio gearset, I only anticipate a best 1.30 60 foot. Not a very violent launch.
I've talked to a tech at Coan and they use their 2.98 gearset in tractor pull stuff. That sounds above and beyond what I'll be putting the gearset through. Have you seen a Coan 2.98 gearset fail?

Hey Bruce. I hope things are well with you and yours. I know you've been going through some trial and tribulations. I hope that has all passed for you. I'll check out Kilgore's sight to see what the gearset looks like.

Don

If you would like to try one of these, your welcome to it. If it works and you are happy we can talk. They are not doing me any good right now and I have had them awhile. They just need to be cleaned up so to speak. Lemme know if you would like to try. I also have some 2.48 straight cuts. They are noisy but are strong.

I'm game for that. Thanks, Bruce. Let's try the 3.06 gearset.
