Any thoughts on adding a Loan-a-Tool section here on TB?

We've all seen the fender roller get passed around, but what about other specialized tools? I would think this would work well with a deposit style system (similar to auto parts stores). Alot of times they have a tool that might work. But alot of times we need something better. Just curious if this has ever been considered. Then again, I guess this email should be aimed at Jay. But feedback would be helpful I'm sure.

I think its a great idea. Sometimes specialty tools are expensive and will only be used once. I have used the loan a tool from chain stores and it works well. Their deposit is the cost of the tool, but who cares when you take it back.

It kind of hit me on the head when I did my springs. I rented tools from all the automakers, but none of them work right and are a hassle. I went ahead and purchased the correct spring compressor for the fronts (from the GM service manual) and I couldn't believe how easy it made the job. I wouldn't have done it any other way even if it cost me over $100 to purchase. I'd be willing to loan it out to help others as well.

In this case the guys that use them professionally don't want them screwed up so they can't make a living with them. Those that do it as a hobby it wouldn't be an issue.

I have rented my HR bushing tool many times...twice it has come back unusable...the person that damaged the tool in both cases did pay for the repair costs though. I now make it very clear that the person WILL pay for damages. I think a sticky with tools available for rent would be a great idea...

That reminds me I have to call Dr boost and get my spring compresser back. Its a good idea but alot of people dont like lending out tools. That fender roller turned out to profitable for someone $50 per use and it costs 250 or 300. I seen that it got broken a few times but I would have bought two of them.

Exactly. I would expect that everyone who did lend tools would have to make some sort of dollar on them. The owner would have to go through the hassle of shipping it out etc. Even if it cost around $25 to $50 to use, it beats spending $150-$300 for buying it. Especially if you are only going to use it once.

Thats what I heard . I heard he is coming back over the summer.
