how do I install my kn air filter and a 160 deg thermostate on an 86 gn...i tryed to open the container to get to the air cleaner but it wouldn't budge is there any trick to it?

Loosen the to 10mm screws holding the MAF sensor and loosen the two hose clamps holding the elbow in place.

Remove the elbow and you will reveal the nut that holds the top of the box on. Remove the nut and you can get to the filter.

A replacement K&N is better than a stock paper filter, but the box is a restriction without work.

hold on man, soon youll be removing the header to get it welded and taking the intercooler out to clean it.
