ok lemme ask you guys this...if my stock pistons are in great shape, should I re-use them IF i had the bottom end re-enforced with billet mains? I'm not trying to run TSM or anything, but just want a reliable street engine that is capable of mid 10's...are stock pistons worth keeping for something like this? I would have the machine shop replace the bearings and polish the crank and reuse the crank as well...that shouldn't cost me too much, just labor work

The problem isn't the pistons, it's the bore of the block.

I'm still confused why your asking these question if you work for Harry?

Yeah you could reuse the pistons, but while you're down that far.... Set of PowerForged Sealed Power pistions were $280 from Summit but I think they've went up to $310. It would be easier since you're taking it down that far to just freshen it all up with new rings and pistions. You can still use your crank and rods. Billet mains will require align boread and honed so the block will have to be bare, of course I know you know that :)

maybe because we don't do any engine work any longer??? that part of the business was gone like 2 years ago...Dan wouldn't give me the time of day with my motor anyways

yeah I think what I may do is just do the pistons, re-use the rods and crank, and get some billet caps, and call it a day...shouldn't cost me too much...i'll do the rest of the work...thanks for the advice guys, this is my first motor i've ever done so I have no idea

Screw the caps, get a girdle if your considering billet mains. You need to do just as much machine work +/- some over the girdle install. The billet mains are NOT a drop in part!

My advice is avoid my nightmare and use self restraint. I purchesed my 3rd TR a little over a year ago, decided that I wanted to make it a street/strip car. My first one ran in the 11's, back in the early/mid 90's on a TE-44, which I thought was pretty respectable. This car I wanted to propell me into the 10's, so I started the build. Since then I have gone from dumping alot of money into it, to an idiotic portion of cash. Changing my mind on parts, deciding to upgrade stuff before the car is even running. The outcome has been a SG1 block w/girdle, eagle crank, ported heads, intake, cam, blah blah. I had to get rid of stuff that would not take me to the promise land because now I want faster, turbo, I/C, Suspension stuff, ect. All those things I had previously purchased, but decided were too small, or not feasible. These cars are way too adictive, and like women will burn holes in your pockets.....

do it all

Don

If that motor is coming out to replace the head gaskets. Myself i would personally check/change the bearings. cause if your luck runs like mine if you don't do it something will happen.

I done this on my current motor when i put the ported irons on and the rebuild did have maybe 5 k miles on it but i still replace the bearings to give me the piece of mind knowing all my clearances are dead on.

TJMO take it for what it's worth.

OH yeah...I believe the statement about these cars burning holes in your pocket like women...LOL!

You said it the worst investment I have ever made.
