My gas oven quit working the other day. The range works great but the oven does not. It does not have any gas coming out of the burners. It does have an electric igniter, but I cann't tell if that is working or not.

Has anybody been through this before?

Thanks,
Kevin

Well do you smell gas when the burners are on. if so then turn it on low and hold a match to it and call it a day....

watch out... my old azz oven stuck on one day... dial was off, but it somehow stuck on. It got so hot it almost burned the place down

Thanks for the replies. I wish it was a pilot light problem, but I do not think it is.

I do not smell gas when I turn the burners on. I took the oven apart. There is a valve that the main gas line comes in, then it splits to the broil and bake burner. I am thinking this might be it.

It's probably the igniter. Gas will not flow to the burners unless the igniter heats up a thermocouple first. It's a safety thing so you don't fill the oven with gas without the igniter working. When you turn the oven on you should see the igniter glow red hot (orange actually) - it lights the gas in the burners. Mine's failed twice on a 6-year old Whirlpool oven/range. If memory serves it's like $20 from Sears.

I 2nd this what Jimmy said. Check and see if the igniter is a HSI (hot surface igniter) or if it is spark ignition. If its spark you should hear and see it make an arching noise.

What he said, BTDT.

replace the igniter! My moms has failed three times in 10 years. I buy two now so I dont have to find one. The one I'm replacing looks like its made of porcelin and gets cherry red it light the gas, easy two wire with wire nuts. Just make sure the power is off.
