i want to get my tub blasted, but cant find a place to do it local to ny. anyone ever get it done? how did it come out? how much does it usually cost?

Found this little gadget so I won't have to get someone else to do it for me. You should be able to rent a power washer, add the attachment, and go for it. No dust or enviromental issues to deal with. Hope this helps.
Sandblaster, Sand Blaster

I dont know that id use sand as it can warp and even remove some metal, there are plenty of other types of media to you. check around.

The warpage is from heat generated from the air compression and the sand hitting the metal. With the water baster set up this isn't near the problem that it is with regular blasting.

I would think the water would cool the surface enough to keep it from warping, but my concern would be the water immediately starting the rusting process to your newly unprotected metal.

The only way I found out about it was one of the "power" shows on cable. Lou used it on his restmod of a Pontiac LeMans and followed up with etching primer to keep the rust probem down. I could see where it would be a problem in tight places but you can blow the water out of the holes and coat them with POR15 also.

Have you tried this yet Ronnie? Since you're kinda in the business I figured you'd know more about it.

get you a soda blaster. harborfreight has them for 99.00.takes paint and rust off without warpping the metal.

The coolest thing I ever used was a dry ice blaster. Coolest get it...

No left over mess except what you remove.

Charlie I can not say weather it would be good or not. Probably fine short term. Looks like you would need to sift sand first. And if you are the first 50 callers you will receive a set of Ginsu knifes......

We almost never use the plastic media any more. No body wants to pay the price. $500 in media will do about 1.5 to 2 med. cars. No labor.

Yea, yea, yea. The worlds full of out of work comodians.
Tell us more about the dry ice blaster and how it works Ronnie.

To be effective it needs lots of air, The dry ice is made into pellets.
It is feed into a hopper with a small auger in the bottom that feeds the line air. No mess. But if you don't order your ice JIT your media will disappear. Not counting coolers being filled for the beach and the occasional dry ice bomb. Should have never showed them that one.

What's JIT and are you talking about filling a 2 liter up with it and throwing it at someone? The ice is great to make rockets out of 2 liters as well.

there is no way i would spray water on to the raw metal.. iam paranoid enough with the small pitting i have now.. i keep soking it all in navel jelly. i have an eastwood soda blaster. its not strong enough to remove the paint on the inner tub, iam guessing they used some stronger stuff on the interior. i have a small blaster now that iam using crushed glass media. not too expensive 40 bucks for 50lbs but i cant reuse any of it cause its flying all over.. even the media blaster takes 2-3 seconds in a fixed spot to break through to the raw metal. between the time and $$ for media i think its worth it to find someone to just do the tub. everything else is off the car (doors,trunk,nose..)and i will be soda blasting little by little.

TP Tools & Equipment
They have a product called Scat blast that we used to use at the shop. It was great for stripping metal of any rust or contaminant. Not cheap but it worked really well.
