I did too, and it was awesome, but I want to stick with the scanmaster. I've owned one for ten years now, and I trust it. Plus I'd like my money to stay within the Buick community :)

SM is built to Rx 160 baud datastream, totally different from what is used today. Most likely the subie transmits its data over a CANBUS? AFAIK the latest SM built was a unit built to Tx/Rx 8192 baud data found in P4 OBD1 ECMs, more specifically the '7730/'7749 ECMs. HTH

Well, the new scanmaster does work with the new Subarus BUT, I'm not sure how it reads and displays knock. I'm hoping it's in degrees of retard, but I'm starting to think it's not... :(

Just to clear up some confusion.

There are several different flavors of Scanmaster. Buick, SyTy, XFI, DSM/3000GT , Subaru , EVO, LS1 , L67 , LT1 (OBD-1).

They all basically look the same, some flavors have a second communication port for external logging to a PC (DSM, Subaru, EVO, SyTy), and/or additional analog inputs.

The Subaru's use a proprietary communication protocol called SSM, although you can also use regular OBD-2 / ISO9141 comms with them .

The knock display for the Subaru Scanmaster is called "knock correction" by the subaru crowd, and reads 0 - 9.5 degrees if I remember correctly. The unit also has a discrete vehicle speed input so that real-time acceleration statistics can be displayed.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for being soo picky but I was told by Cobb that it's not in tenths of a degree, all the way through-that it's kind of odd, like in increments of 1.4 degrees. Is that not the case with your scanmaster?

according to my notes, its in increments of .5 degree.

Sweet. Buying one now. We'll see what's up on this. Can't STAND driving blind... Oh by the way, does this see boost? Maybe off the ecu from the MAP input?

Another question on this. I was talking to Aeroforce on how they do it, and they said they need my ECU address because without it, there's no way of getting their gauge to see the actual feedback knock. Does the scanmaster need this address too?

The instructions say that there's a plug for the LM1 innovate wide band. That model is obsolete now, not to mention that Innovate doesn't carry too nice of a reputation around here. Would you have any provisions for the AEM widebands to plug in?

any wideband that has the same analog out put spec as the innovate will work. Any Innovate unit will work too. You hit the nail on the head when you said the innovate does not have the best rep here but in many of the the other Automotive communities it is the brand of choice. Sort of like Walbro pumps.
